I was listening to the audiobook, and I got just over an hour into it - I DNF this at 10%. I guess this was a trial run for me - I'm not one who listens to audiobooks, just because I feel like it's hard for me to pay attention to things if they're not physically there for me. This kind of solidified that for me - audiobooks are not my thing. I did try really hard to pay attention to this one, but after an hour of listening, I figured not only do I dislike audiobooks, but also the book itself just wasn't my cup of tea.

I won't be giving it a rating because I just didn't get far enough into it to give it a solid review. I also won't be adding a read date, as I don't want to add it to my reading challenge for the same reason - I just didn't get very far into it.

Not my favorite Sarah Dessen but a good YA read. I thought that the boy in this one, Dexter, was by far the most realistic teenage/early 20s boy that she has written. The others just always seem way more mature than could be reasonably be expected and just too good to be true. Dexter is more on target and still really likable.

Remy, the girl, on the other hand is written more like a mid 20 year old than a girl right out of high school. But maybe that is my naivety speaking.

Definitely one of her better books, even though there seems to be some confusion on the author's part about what year the book is set in. (One scene seems to have a cell phone in it, but in another the 18-year-old protagonist writes about her childhood in the 1980s.)

I really identified with the control-freak heroine, and I thought her quirky boyfriend was delightful. (Which is actually pretty rare --- the love interests are usually pretty boring in straight-up chick lit.)

And the side story of the romance-book-author mother who's on husband number five was funny, especially on the meta level.

Review

This is a very sickly sweet story – it is literally boy bumps into girl – stalks her in a sweet kind of way , they get together ,……and then don’t…… and then do.

It was an ok story and quite an easy listen, I would think that my mum would love it as it is quite Mills and Boony (is that a word?)

It is my first Dessen book and reading the other reviews one of the better ones ……….. I will reserve my judgement and try another one to give her the benefit of the doubt, but it was a little bit too sweet for my liking.

Perhaps there will be a serial killer or something in some of the other ones which will peak my interest !!

I quite liked the characters, Remy is not the normal sweet no sex before marriage kind of girl, she has smoked and shock horror had more than 1 conquest!!

Dexter is cool, he is clumsy and doesn't beat around the bush.
A couple of the other characters are cool too, little john was sweet and his crush on his boss was cute.
Ted was just grumpy throughout the whole book haha.
Hate Spinnerbait !

4.5 stars

This is probably my favorite Sarah Dessen read for the year.

There are four reasons to which My Lullaby was enjoyable:

1. Remy.

Remy was a really easy character to like and relate to. Even though I found her approach toward guys to be sad, I could understand it. Coming from a broken home myself, it was easy to put myself in her shoes. Being afraid that a loved one will end up leaving you, or that it won't work out, is a common fear among many people. Sarah Dessen did a great job at showing us why Remy is the way she is.

I also enjoyed reading the story through her POV. She has a strong and caring personality that is easy to admire. I especially enjoyed her relationships with her family.

2. The Romance.

The romance in this book is probably one of the most realistic ones that I've read in a while. While Remy and Dexter made a cute couple, it wasn't a perfect relationship and I loved that because relationships aren't perfect in real life. I wasn't so sure about Dexter at first, but he grew to be an endearing character.

3. The Other Characters.

While Remy and Dexter are the ones most visible in the spotlight, they aren't the only good characters. I felt that all of the characters were fleshed out pretty well. A lot of times I find that non-main characters come across as dull, unrealistic, or barely there. This is not the case here. These characters definitely felt real.

4. The Story Itself.

The story itself is interesting, and I'm always a sucker for stories that involve character growth and an emotional journey of some kind.

Final Verdict: I really liked this. It's not my most favorite Sarah Dessen read, but it was pretty awesome. 4.5 Stars.

I originally thought of Sarah Dessen as fluff writing for teen girls, but now that I've gotten through two of her books (this one and What Happened to Goodbye?), I'm beginning to think that she's dealing with more than just fluff. It seems like Dessen favors a certain kind of main character, a girl who is self-sufficient because of her dysfunctional parents, but I kind of like her.

I agree with some of the earlier reviewers: Remy and her friends seem much older than graduated seniors, considering their histories, experiences, and world-views, but that's okay. I liked the contrast of Remy's mom's and Remy's brothers personalities with her own, and it was nice to see that each of her trio of friends has a distinct personality. Finally, I fell in love with Dexter well before Remy had the chance to even learn his name... he's definitely a keeper.

This was alright but I just didn't connect with the protagonist at all like I usually do with Dessen's MC's

It’s gonna be a HARD PASS!!! And a Sweet 1st DNF of the year! I read 20% of this book. And it was painful. If you like romance... contemporary... and the same type of female that is wrote about in all of these books... BA chick who don’t need a man, is really smart, really pretty, and has a bright future a head of her..... but probably, definitely still falls for the guy.... this is your type of book! Unfortunately it is not my type of book. I don’t hate it, but I’m not reading a book that is not gonna fire up my brainwaves. Too many good books out there!

This is my favourite Sarah Dessen. I've read it many times, but as I got to the last page last night, I found myself tearing up. I love this story; I love the characters. I know many people complain that Sarah Dessen's books have similar plots, this one is somewhat similar to Once and or All, but that doesn't make the reading experience any less enjoyable or the book worse. This is a great story, with interconnected subplots that all explore the same question; is taking a risk on love worth it? The answer is very clear and wonderfully communicated.
