3.9 AVERAGE

Classic Sarah Dessen, great contemporary read

Even after reading this 3 times, it's still one of my favorite books. :)

It's a 4.5 really. Love Sarah Dessen. :)

I was fairly annoyed with the ending; you never see where their relationship goes. Then again, I'm pretty thick.
funny lighthearted relaxing slow-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes
emotional medium-paced

So I had previously marked this as read, but it turns out I don't think I actually read it since I have no memory of it whatsoever. Anyway. This was another decent book from Dessen. You can tell that as time passes, her books get older (this one not only mentions sex, but having it with someone that you aren't in love with, just for fun!). It actually has a different enough formula from Dessen's other books I've read this year that I was surprised. Not a ton happened it felt like, definitely less plot than others. I just want justice for Remy's friend Jess. Jess was Remy's fat (sorry, solidly built) friend who literally existed for no reason other than to support Remy? Driving her and her other thin friends elsewhere, cheering them up. Girl didn't even get to go to university, just night school. #JusticeForJess

On to bingo:
[x] protagonist with unique (or masculine) name
[ ] "not like the other girls" protagonist
[x] conflict with (or absent) mother
[ ] protagonist is escaping unhappy things at home and goes somewhere new (this one is a metaphor this time)
[ ] works in a cafe
[x] artsy male love interest
[ ] seemingly perfect older sibling
[ ]"alt" friends (gothic, loners, something about drugs, etc.)
[x] daddy issues

This Lullaby is about a teenage girl called Remy who has always been sceptical about love and all matters of the heart. She is sure that love doesn't exist and anyone who believes in it is only standing to get hurt. Her mother has have 4 marriages and is on the verge of her 5th - all of which have failed and left Barbara heart broken and leaving Remy to pick up the pieces-. She has just graduated high school and is going to stanford after the Summer. She sets about finding a summer boyfriend and meets Dexter at her future step father's car dealership. He instantly feels a conection between them which Remy doesn't feel and thinks he's crazy. They end up bumping into each other all over which he says is 'fate' and that they are supposed to be together. When dexter's band plays at Remy's mother's wedding they decide to start a relationship which Remy decides is only till the end of summer. through the course of the book Dexter and Remy's relationship keeps changing and Remy changes with it for the better.
This book captured my heart and made me feel for Remy and wish she would get over her relationship issues and just let Dexter into her heart. She goes on a real emotional journey as everything around her changes. She just has to change with it. Everything works out for the best in the end and i absolutly fell in love with both Remy and Dexter. Even though Dexter is completly imperfect and Remy is obsessed with perfection and control. They balence each other out and make perfection.

August 21-25,2016: comfort re-read; 5 stars, still a favorite; Dexter is a balm for my anxiety-ridden soul
Re-reads: many many
Original read: 2004ish; 5 stars

I'm sorry, but seeing all these high ratings for this book make me lose my faith in humanity. This book was BEYOND AWFUL. The character was a whiny bitch that no one can relate with at all (unless of course, you're a whiny bitch too). The story line was awful and unrealistic. The whole time the protagonist was running around bitching about this or that and this guy named Dexter TOTALLY digs that. I don't understand. And he creepily climbs through her window without her permission and after days of her hatin' on him, they just start making out. Oh my goodness. After reading this, I wanted to burn it and send it back to Dessen, telling her that I want my money, and hours of my life back.

Second Read: I almost forgot how funny this book was. I think I was very negative about this the first time I read it because I had just discovered Sarah Dessen. I definitely see this as being a book I can reread for ages. Not my favorite of hers (still is Just Listen) but it is up there.

First read: This book definitely have a lot of pros and cons. Overall, I did have a blast reading it. I still prefer [b:Just Listen|51738|Just Listen|Sarah Dessen|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1358270741s/51738.jpg|1032901]. Annabel totally beats Remy. Remy was very unlikable (but I liked her, oddly.)
