This book actually had me in my feels. I had heard from others this one could be boring, being essentially a travel book, and Auel is known for tedious details that can drag, but the interactive moments were very well done. There were points of rhe book I was actively worried for Ayla and Jondalar, as well as their animal companions. The different people they meet are all interesting and there's so many real, modern world parallels that when you read it you feel, "There's nothing new under the sun." Yes, this is an older book but it's well worth the time to read. Solid 4th book.

Too many examples of why these books are not well written. Just so I remember, they are: repetitive are dialog is overwritten. But this particular book could have been two... some developments in the plot might have fared better with a little more show and a little less tell. All that said, still the setting is so well done. Just found a referent for the burial from the prior book. Was excavated not long ago.

And this is all the more reason that social networks ask for taste - did I like it, versus was it good. Maybe that's why they are still so poor at predicting. Cause everyone has comfort food.

Listened to this as an audiobook.

The structure of this book was a little strange, because of the journey aspect. It felt like there were lots of smaller peaks spread throughout the book, that could have almost been fully separate stories. They did in the end all build up to the climax at the end, but during the events they felt fairly self contained. This book did what the second in the series did, it ended basically in the middle of a scene. I'm glad I didn't read these as they were released, that would have driven me absolutely insane. Cliffhanger-ish chapters are maddening enough, but when going from one book to the next, I would like at last some sense of closure.

The mammoth sex was um, quite a thing.

Another excellent book in the series. In addition to the story line, I like reading about the animals and the plants medicinal and cooking purposes.
