Standard Jane Harper mystery: Australia as a character, family secrets, murder. A perfectly good book

For a while, I was worried I wasn't going to like this as much as I wanted to. It was definitely a slow burn. But. The atmosphere, the isolation, the tension - and all of it so quiet and contained in a way the open space of the forbidding Australian outback should prevent - was riveting. Alongside protagonist Nathan Bright, the reader unlocks clues to unravel a tragedy that ends up bringing the Bright family together through two fractured generations and the beginnings of a third.

A lot of the story unfolds through seemingly innocuous dialogue and flashbacks. But both highlight the isolation each character feels, even when supposedly in conversation with someone else. And you never forget that everything in their lives is impossibly dangerous, between reminders of distance, temperature, and preparatory gear.

Another thing that I was surprised to appreciate: a hopeful and contented ending.

The Lost Man is definitely worth a read.

Jane Harper done it again. This stand alone had me guessing till the very end. She did an excellent job of making the reader feel the isolation and loneliness that can stem from this type of environment. Can't wait for her next book.

Third book of hers. Always different, good stories.

This is my favorite Jane Harper book yet! I really enjoy listening to these. The narrator's Aussie accent enchants me even when the subject matter is sad or bleak.

another absolutely phenominal thriller from jane harper. this particular book hit me hard and personally, and i feel so deeply for these characters.

I enjoyed the amount of character building and world building there was before the pieces fell into place for the story, and fhink the way the mystery unravels was interesting. Parts became predictable, but I think the filling in and reveal of the extent of the bad was believable.
