Perhaps it was a mistake to read this one. I haven't read the comics. But I didn't find anything about this story remotely interesting or important on its own. It's a personal struggle between two siblings, the "Dawn of the Jedi" title is overblown as there's nothing historical or intriguing to learn about regarding the Jedi. It takes place 25,000 years before the movies everyone knows, yet it's hardly different in terms of technology, language, etc. I would've thought it'd be set in a more primitive time, which would make it slightly more interesting as a Star Wars book. How has nothing really changed that much in 25,000 years?? Here on earth, 25,000 years ago humans were just learning how to make ropes!!

Ugh!!! I am not sure why Star Wars has this as their first book in the Star Wars Novel Timeline. I wanted to like this book. I wanted to be a fan of the series but this disappointed me. I finally had to abandon this book. Should I continue the series in hopes the next book will help my disappointment? There was nothing to hang on to. It just didn't go anywhere and I was wondering when I would feel the adventure. I felt like I was reading someone's homework or thesis paper. Pretty bad huh? Imagine how I felt. I hate writing bad reviews because I'm such a positive person. Forgive me. ;(

Not the best Starwars Legends book, but not the worst either. Although, the story itself was pretty well written, I think the lackluster lineup of characters made it a bit dull. I don't mind conflict and turmoil within the MC, but Lanoree was borderline stupid sometimes.
Leaving Tre behind and announcing her arrival at the top of her lung in the final moments, all this makes her less appealing as a MC
. Also, some questions have been left unanswered which, in my opinion, should have been answered in this very book;
mystery of Gree, Dal's journey after the "first death" etc
. The book had some really good moments too; the concept of Ashla and Bogan, the descriptions of temples and the whole journey system; all these things made the reading worthwhile.

This has been an interesting read although I did get mildly confused at times because of the constant back and forth between Lanoree’s past training and her present pursuits.

This book does pave the way to the reasons as to the opposing sides of her and her brothers position in the force, but only sheds a small light on the origins of the Jedi. You discover the use of swords as it pre-dates lightsabers, and on closer inspection perceive possible hints at lightsaber technology, however it paints very light light on Tho Yor. I do feel that there could be a much stronger introduction into the beginnings of the Jedi, as the actions of Lanoree are somewhat questionable due to the motive of her use of the force. At one point she nearly steps over to the dark side, using a mind eraser on a victim, and several times you witness her killing subjects with little or no concern. Added to this, Lanoree also neglects her twileak companion. He rescues her several times during their pursuit, and when he is shot, she ignores him.

During the story, there was a much lager emphasis on her personal personal family feud between her and Dal, which although was the main driving force for the overall plot, became irksome at times. This book does give some really nice action scenes at times, but does feel tiresome due to the constant change in the past history and present pursuits, with little regard to Lanoree’s overall character.

For this reason, I give it a 3 star rating.

Really impressed with this book. It's been a long time since I've done this kind of Scifi reading, and so I opted for something I was familiar with. Starting with the first in the chronology, this introduced some interesting aspects. The story flowed nicely and kept a good pace.

I enjoyed the book, but was expecting at least some connection other than the Jedi name to other novels. I looked up some of the items in this book on Wookipedia (Tython for example) and found a great deal of background. I have read several Old Republic books and most of the post New Republic books as well. To not see some connection to the Old republic places was... disappointing. None the less, the story was enjoyable. I found the concept of "Ashla" and "Bogan" interesting, considering the final state of force practitioners after the Yuuzhan Vong series of books.

I will continue reading this series as it becomes available.

I mean, it's not bad at all. There are a lot of interesting elements and touches. Unfortunately there aren't many memorable locations or story elements. The main bad guy is just a vindictive tool whose motivations were nonsensical and his hatred was not only misplaced, but totally random to begin with. That being said, the main character is likable and the super ancient galaxy that predates The Old Republic by over 20,000 years is very interesting ways and following what's basically a force using smuggler was an interesting concept.

The main character has little emotion, and when she does exhibit any at all she quickly gets over it. Frustrating to the outside observer since it's somewhat hard to relate to her. On the other hand, she definitely has a lot of flaws and that makes her interesting. The setting of the ancient galaxy far far away has a lot of potential, and I think the author did a good job setting up intrigue for future stories. I initially tried to read this book normally and quickly lost interest, however found the audiobook quite enjoyable.
