It has been a while since I read a fantasy book like this, I really enjoyed it!

I tried, I can’t do it. The sentences are so choppy and badly written. She’s not using double negatives, but the way the sentences are written I can’t tell what exactly she means a lot of the time. I have too much on my TBR pile to continue here. Concept might have been decent, but I can’t get past the poor sentence structure.

this book was pretty good, but fairly non-linear. I'm used to my heroines knowing a little bit more of what is happening or even what they are going to do. I enjoyed the world very much but! at the vern end of the book, like, even on the LAST PAGE of the last chapter - there was a "but our heroine must do xyz! look for the next book in 2006!" WHO DOES THIS!?

I'm sure it was just me, but this book was weird. I felt lost and confused through basically the entire book yet somehow enjoyed it? I think I like the ideas in the book, and I'll definitely try to read the second one to see if it was just first book awkwardness. *fingers crossed*

Could not get into the book’s world. I felt I didn’t know what was going on and unfortunately did not like the main character. I was somewhat interested in the nightshade plot but it took too long to get back to it.

*spoilers* This is my second time reading this although the first time was a long time ago and I don't remember much from it which was why I read it again, let me just say I'm pleasantly surprised that there was no romance in it at all. it's frustrating when characters are trying to save the world and the author throws in a romance when like sex and shit is clearly not important when some evil fucking dragon is trying to create some kind of goddess of death. Despite that though I was kind of hoping for something to sort of happen with Severn and Kaylin. also it was weird that Teela and Tain are constantly mentioned together but Tain is actually never physically present where we see him speak. it was pretty good though the different races were cool and the lack of romance was refreshing even if some of the wording and dialogue was a bit confusing and awkwardly phrased at times. I think the world building could be better. but that's just me.

I can't quite figure out why I didn't like this book. Maybe it's just me, but the writing is very vague. I never get a feel of what kind of city the story is taking place or of what the characters look like.

I get that the author is trying really hard for us to believe that everyone loves the main character Kaylin, but she just sounds like she's too incompetent to be a Hawk. She apparently failed all the classes she had to take to become a Hawk. Which makes me wonder what kind of organization the Hawks are if they're going to allow her to be one of them?

Maybe Michelle Sagara is trying to show us that Kaylin is an underachiever but because there was something special about her everyone wanted to keep her. I don't know, there was just too much going on here with a lot of back story that was only somewhat hinted at. And NO ONE wanted to tell Kaylin anything. She asked "why?" a lot and the answers were just so...vague that I don't think I learned anything about anyone.

And my review is so all over the place that I don't know if I'm making any sense now.

Basically, the story is really compelling and so is the world that the author has created but I think that she didn't really do a great job at bringing the world to life and making us care about the main character. I think she has potential which is why I'm going to continue reading this series while I hope it gets better.

DNF at 200 pages or so. I wanted to like this book so badly. The premiss seems very fun, and the world building was ok, but the beginning of it was a soup of information. I was constantly looking back to check species names and groups within the three factions. I found the information confusing in how it was laid out, and ultimately, I couldn't get past feeling like something was terribly incomplete. A huge disappointment as she is a Toronto writer and I wanted really badly to like this one.....
