There was just no reason this book needed to be over 400 pages long. And the back and forth just went on and on and on. It was cute but I just struggled to want to finish by the end.

If you love Schitt’s Creek, you’ll love this book…yes, a small town like SC was sold to Pat’s dad!

I loved Patrick’s goofiness and just overall positivity and energy and his love for little Jo!

I can’t wait to read about grumpy James in the next book!

The Buy-In is the first in the "Love Stories in Sheet Cake, Texas" series. If you like good banter, the show "Shitt's Creek," clean rom-coms, or Second Chance Love, then you should definitely check this book out! It was sweet, funny, and a very enjoyable read.

I wanted to like it bc it had all the things I usually like but it was boring and the characters annoyed me.

A new author to me, I really loved this story of second chances by Emma St. Clair. Both Pat and Lindy were relatable and often hilarious. There are plenty of genuinely funny moments, balanced with sweet and often heart-achingly poignant ones. I also enjoyed the interactions between Lindy and her friends, and the rest of the Graham family.

My one negative, I found the pacing very slow at times, with a lot of the jokes and names over-explained (particularly in the first third of the book). At almost 450 pages, the extra pages just don't add anything to what is a pretty straightforward 'kinda fake marriage' rom-com trope. As such, I think this would have benefited from another edit, with a good 50-60 pages cut to sharpen the remaining story up. But that's perhaps just my personal opinion, and i'm really glad I persevered, as I loved the connection between Pat and Lindy.

I loved Pat's nervous/awkward moment giggle, as that's also one of my own quirks, and the scenes in the jail, and with the squirrels had me in tears of laughter. I do think that Lindy could have put Pat out of his misery sooner, but we can't have everything we want, and ultimately I was more than happy with the ending. That gardening moment? Still crying tears of joy!

I can't wait to see the other Graham brother's meet their matches...  Perhaps they already have?

Fun new series from St. Clair. Fans of her Love Cliches series will be happy to finally learn more about Harper's brothers, who are turning out to be quite the characters. Warning: reading this book will make you want to eat cake.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author--all opinions are my own.

What I read: The Buy-In by Emma St. Clair

Why I picked it up: This is the continuation of the Love Cliches series – following Harper’s brothers.

How I read it: On Kindle Unlimited

What it’s about: Pat’s father, Tank, buys a town – Sheet Cake, Texas (named after that famous dessert, which we had a lot as kids even though I’m not from Texas). It’s weird, until he finds out Lindy, his one true love, lives there, raising her niece. Then he’s all in. While trying to get his brothers on board with the project, he ends up wearing an ankle monitor – which seems not so much for safety but rather as a way to get Lindy to see him as the love of her life and give them a second chance. Oh, and they get married to help her keep custody of Jo. It’s a hoot!

What I liked: I love how a town comes together around a project – and this series is all about that beginning with Pat and Lindy.

What I disliked: There’s a villain to the whole “renovate the town” project, but we get zero interaction with them, which feels weird.

Genre: Chaste love story, small town, second chance, marriage of convenience.

Rating & Recommendation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and sure – this is a sweet series, and you don’t need to read Love Cliches to get it.
