A great reflection on relationships with dogs. Leans heavy on leash free. I enjoyed this book.

There was a point where I really thought I wouldn’t get through this.

Then I changed my mind again.

Picking this up was a test to see how long I could read without crying: Ten poems? Three poems? One?

And now, it is finished.

Be prepared. A dog is adorable and noble.
A dog is a true and loving friend. A dog is also a hedonist.

This book is glorious in a homely, lived-in way. Humanity bears many sins and misfortunes, but our greatest blessing may be that we get to live with dogs.

"A dog comes to you and lives with you in your own house, but you / do not therefore own her, as you do not own the rain, or the / trees, or the laws which pertain to them." –from "Her Grave"

It's Mary Oliver writing about dogs. I love both Mary Oliver's poetry and dogs so this collection was an easy sell. I spent a lot of time trying not to tear up. Lovely and heart-warming.
