The book where I learned Mary Oliver and I might not get along
I'm being generous in giving it three stars. Many of the poems are poems only if one uses the broadest possible definition and, quite frankly, they should have been left in the rough drafts folder. The illustrations are beautiful and I'm a dog person so... Three stars it is.
I love Mary Oliver's poetry, but this book was a sentimental project and lacked the tension and precision of her other poetry. When an occasional dog poem is found in her other books they work in the mix, all together it just becomes cloying. And some poems hardly read like her at all, they were just purely observational or conversational and didn't work on two levels like her poetry usually does.
