I read this in an hour and a half, wich doesn't happen to me really often, but this was just so beautiful. The writing was amazing and for me, someone who barely reads poetry, also easy to understand, but at the same time it wasn't too simple.
Maybe I just read it too fast, but I didn't feel that much of a connection to Jane throughout the book, wich I thought was kinda disappointing, but that was really the only thing I didn't like. Amazing book, and got me out of a reading slump so plus points for that.

I want so much-to be versatile, charming, warm, deep, intelligent, accomplishing something, loving,
fooling around, giving instead of getting, cheery not driven, sure not uncertain, possessing not anticipating, answers not questions.

Amazing book- incredible use of poetry. Very unique and hauntingly beautiful. Really cool way of using different types of media to tell one cohesive story! It was interesting to see how she broke down the story into sections and how much that helped me get into the right mindset. And the ideas around the murders of women fleshed out through the book opened my eyes to how fucked up society’s perspective of these incidents are and how murder can affect the victims loved ones/how loved ones deal with it individually.

This memoir examines the death of the author’s aunt Jane, with a combination of the author’s poetry, her aunt’s childhood journal entries & prose all attempting to understand Jane’s murder.
I like that it isn’t so much about the grim details of the murder, but about the woman herself, who she was in all her darkness and light.
It’s also about the scars her murder leaves on her family, even those who never met her. The way ancestral trauma is woven into our bones, whether we like it or not.
The author is attempting to transform this pain & the ghosts that haunt her into something physical, trying to make sense of an awful tragedy.
A super quick read & really beautifully written.

Maggie Nelson is as always a genius, if a bit less polished here than in her later works. Riveting regardless, and with real transferable pain. It often left me questioning my own perceptions of what poetry is, given the sparse/simplistic style...but the images left nothing to be desired. I feel like the perfect niche audience for this book and I finished it in no time at all. Compulsively readable & haunting.
