4.5 - i have beef with maggie nelson over something extremely dipshitted she said a while back that i now only half-remember but goddamn can she write. i will grant that in this aspect she was undoubtedly aided by the subject matter which really doesn’t need much treatment in order to be rendered elegiac and powerful but nonetheless on the whole i thought this was breathtaking
作者自己的诗和妈妈的妹妹高中大学时期作的诗和各种媒体报道交织一起讲述阿姨被连环杀手谋杀的往事,个别的能读出感觉,但大部分都没太懂
An incredible, pretty perfect book about the murder of Maggie Nelson’s aunt, which happened a few years before she was born. It’s written mostly in verse, with selections from Jane’s diaries and some newspaper and book excerpts, namely one true crime book that was published about a string of murders that Jane’s was connected with at the time. I love how Jane attempts to triangulate from those sources and from the stories Nelson’s family told her how to witness this event that lives in her memory, despite not having actually lived through it herself.

I inadvertently decided to read this book at the same time as making my way through the OJ Simpson trial episodes of "You're Wrong About," which center Nicole in the narrative, rendering her a fully realized character instead of a footnote in her own murder, like we see with so many other true crime stories. Maggie Nelson was ahead of her time with that sentiment, I saw a lot of myself in her depiction of Jane. This one will stay with me for a while.

3.5 stars. ‘Hideous’ made me weep uncontrollably that I had to put the book down.
