I LOVED this, and I dare you to read it and not be blown away. Stephanopoulos takes us through 60+ years of history with “fly on the wall” stories and retellings of some of America’s biggest moments in the White House Situation Room.

You name it, it’s in here: The Bay of Pigs, the assassination of JFK, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the attempted assassination of Reagan, Desert Storm, 9/11, the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, and COVID-19.

I learned so much, and to say I never wanted it to end would be an understatement. Also, highly recommend listening to this on audiobook, as GS interviews staff that were present and participating in each respective crisis.

I really enjoyed the book and as a history buff I even learned lots of new things. Sad to finish it!

The Situation Room was good in many respects. I learned a lot of quality history about how Presidents have used this room since its creation under Kennedy. Included in that history was how each President and their key staff responded in critical moments including telltale leadership characteristics. Unsurprisingly, Trump did not lead in any way similar to all the others and the staff needed to manage him more than the crisis itself. The book’s weakest chapter dealt with the Clinton Administration when the author was either there or very close to the individuals there. It’s as though George did not want to tell as much of the story of that time as of the times he was not as close to the participants. 3.75 stars.

Really nice to just have a history book after a lot of political science type stuff. Each chapter is the story of an incident in the situation room. Highly recommend the audiobook because the interviews were done on audio, apparently, and the real voices of the interviewees are used instead of just quoting them. I don't know that I learned anything super new, but it was a well-written, easy read.

Excellent pace, not so filled with names that I felt lost, really humanized the incredible officers of the Situation Room. Pretty amazing book to read. May Gary Bresnahan be better recognized one day for the incredible work he's done for 40 years!
