Going into this I wasn’t aware that Midnight at the Christmas Bookshop was a sequel and maybe that was my mistake but right now I cannot see how reading the first book could have made my reading experience better.
There are a few things that I genuinely enjoyed in this book like Carmen’s nieces and nephews who were incredibly cute and Mr. McCredie, the old, sometimes slightly confused bookshop owner. I loved the vibe of the bookshop… all the books scattered everywhere in the shop… the dream of every reader.
However I did not really enjoy the writing and how things or conversations were described. I expected a cute christmas romance but I kind of missed the romance and the christmas vibes. Yes, there is snow and talk of Christmas decorations but the whole christmassy vibe did not come across for me.

"It was like the queen's house in Alice In Wonderland, though.
However much he walked away from it, took a different direction, he found his feet inevitably leasing back towards the central street in the entire city...
Even as he felt himself approaching, he couldn't help it. His feet strayed up on the hill. He could hear the music and see the blinding lights of a festival he barely understood; happy noise and music everywhere, all emanating from the tiny windows in the little Christmas bookshop."

Returning to bookseller Carmen in Edinburgh at Christmastime was a joyous treat. Lovelorn (drama with ex-boyfriend Oke), needing a new home (drama with her sister Sofia) and worrying Mr McCredie will sell the shop (to go exploring) all gives Carmen plenty to tackle before Christmas. There are some returning characters, including her best friend, her sister, nieces and nephew and some new ones, including a greedy souvenir seller and her sister's new 'manny'. Uplifting, expressive the and a love letter to the city of Edinburgh, I loved being back in Carmen's life. It's the second in this series, following The Christmas Bookshop, and is in the same setting with the same humour sprinkled throughout. A feel-good, seasonal read. I definitely need to start some of her book, start her other series.
