An excellent insight into the life of one of Christianity’s great minds
This was a great insight into the life of Martin Luther. Bainton recalls his story in a way that is both scholarly and accessible, and touches on both his life and his theology.
Here I Stand was very informative and I learned a lot about the reformation and Luther himself. While it wasn’t the most enjoyable read, it was packed with insight and I liked seeing the woodcut images throughout the book from Luther’s tracts and other sources. I’m looking forward to reading a more narrative-driven biography of Luther as well, but I’m glad I read this classic.
While wonderfully written, this biography on Martin Luther was a real challenge for me to read (I was looking up vocabulary every other paragraph!). Excellent book though, and one that I would read again. Great coverage of Luther's life and work.
This was a long one, but well worth the read. It strengthened and encouraged my faith to see how Luther wrestled and struggled and placed the truth of scripture as his guide instead of his feelings.
Bainton's volume is a worthwhile introduction to Luther, braiding European history and Lutheran theology throughout. The narrative pace drags immediately before and after Worms, and the intrigue of the events is sometimes lost in Bainton's tepid explorations of Luther's psyche and motivations. The early and late life sections are remarkably written, as are the descriptions of the church of the Middle Ages.

I tried. I found this very dry. Completely interesting subject but tedious. I apparently am the only one who thinks this given the reviews. I finally had to let go of the guilt for not wanting to continue. I hate not finishing but this book became a thorn of taunting every time I picked it up. So now it'll forever remain unfinished sadly. I can find more engaging books about Luther hopefully.
