Warren Ellis is not for the faint of heart. To say this was one of the more interesting and unusual serial killer novels would be a complete understatement. A police procedural at its core the book is a shotgun blast through the bizarre underbelly of Manhatten.

Action-packed and violent, sometimes too much of the latter. There were some details that felt oddly fake (the number of murders in NY every time the detective turned on the police radio, the speed with which people recover from injuries and insanity etc.).

An excellent read by one of my favorite graphic storytellers. This prose thriller is one part Rex Stout and one part James Patterson and all Warren Ellis.

Highly recommended.

Closer to a 3.5

Just a simple enjoyable book from Warren Ellis. Very different than Crooked Little Vain, and a bit more in line with his detective comic books.

John Tallow goes through a rough day as a NYC Detective and then gets stuck with the toughest case possible. He stumbles into a room with about 200 guns each connected to an unsolved murder. The supporting cast really makes this book good. The CSUs and even the main antagonists make the book worth reading if you just want a fun detective book.

Either I got used to the way he writes, or later chapters were edited differently, but early only he wrote in a very English phrase and way of talking. It threw me off at first being a NYC based book but sounding very English, but after 30 or so pages I didn't notice it anymore.

Entertaining, off-beat thriller and very Warren Ellis, for good or ill.

My Thoughts

Man, I never thought I would go 2/2 with solid, gritty, exciting crime thrillers. This one is much different than Ghost Man by Hobbs, but I like this one almost as much. This is my first read by Ellis and he grabbed a new fan. This book had an action sequence at the beginning that just made me glued to the pages. I could not let the book go. Despite not having much more action sequences of violence afterwards I was hooked until the end. The language and the way the characters spoke to one another sold me. The gritty, raw, and dark humor/sarcastic dialogue I just loved. I wish I could recite a few of my favorite lines, but this post might get blocked!

The story line was very intriguing and I was just not sure how things would play. If you are looking for the next great crime thriller and you have not read this book, then you must put this next on your TBR pile. Great characters, great dialogue, good action, and story line that will hold you until the end. I hope to see a few of these characters in the future again.
