I thought this would be a four star book, but then I read the ending. Oof. The book read like the author had experience with mountaineering, and it turns out she does, which made everything feel so real. The story ruffled my feathers and kept me guessing all the way to the last page.

I have absolutely zero knowledge on mountain climbing, hiking, or even nature. I hate the cold. And I’m afraid of heights. Diving into this book was fun, because I learned so much. I really like the official terms used. I have no clue what any of it is but it’s adventurous and I like it. I love that the author drew inspiration from her own experiences. I’m just gonna say it: AMY MCCULLOCH IS A BADASS! This made me want to watch mountain climbing documentaries to learn more! This book was tense and so interesting. It’s a bit of a slow burn and more suspense than thriller, but I really enjoyed it. Catch me watching some climbing documentaries now! I highly recommended this if you’re looking for a suspenseful vibe.

I really liked this one, but I will say that the pacing was a little slow in the beginning. I also saw the big “twist” at the end coming from pretty much the beginning. That being said, I thought it was a really enjoyable read. The descriptions of climbing at once made me want to try and at the same time, the bigger part of me solidified the decision that I will never climb a mountain.

This is a thriller set on the slopes of Manaslu in Nepal, written by a woman who has extensive climbing experience.
In short, journalist Cecily gets the chance of a lifetime to interview a world-famous free climber. The only trouble is that Charles will grant the interview only if Cecily agrees to join the team that's attempting to summit Manaslu, the 8th highest peak in the world. Cecily doesn't have a lot of experience, but did climb a few times with her ex-boyfriend.
After team member dies under mysterious circumstances shortly after the group lands in Nepal, Cecily's guard is up. The accident and death rate increases as the team slowly ascends to each higher camp, but Cecily is determined to conquer her fears and doubts. Still she can't shake the feeling that there's a killer on the mountain and that she might be the next victim.
The thriller itself was fine, but the beauty of this book is found in the details and descriptions of high altitude climbing. I was swept up in the team's progress and liked learning mountaineering tips along with Cecily.
The unabridged audiobook was read by Katie Leung. I had a hard time accepting some of her various accents, but her pacing and expression were good and held my interest.
Thanks to the publishers for review copies in various media.
