Journalist Cecily Wong has given up everything to join famous mountaineer Charles McVeigh on his record-breaking climb of Mt. Manaslu, the eighth-highest peak in the world. When a climber dies in a freak accident, Cecily worries the expedition might have to turn back. Then a second climber dies, and Cecily wonders if, instead of blaming the deaths on altitude sickness, she's trapped high in the mountains with a killer.

You can tell that McCulloch has actually summited Mt. Manaslu because her descriptions of high altitude climbing felt intensely real. I loved that Cecily was a relatable beginning climber caught up in an adventure that pushed her to her limits. The mystery itself was overly complicated and a bit disappointing, but I still think this is a fun read for anyone looking for an adventure.

This reads more like an action adventure novel than a thriller, but is still incredibly fun!

The plot is intense and the climb is well paced. I was right there with Cecily while she attempted to summit the mountain. The descriptions are great fun and the whodunit, while a bit obvious, is greatly detailed. I didn't find any of the usual plot holes I come across at times with mysteries and I really did like the way the entire thing pieced itself together.

Overall, a fun and exciting read that lends itself well to someone wanting to climb a mountain but not wanting to do all the work. Also, this activated in me a new fear of precipitation, so that's cool.

this thriller was very middle ground for me … I didn’t love it but it was still entertaining to read and had me in this position the entire time 🫣

I’m usually a big fan of high stakes crazy remote thrillers (see: the guest list, one of the girls, no exit 🤌🏼), so I was so excited to get into BREATHLESS!

unfortunately, it fell flat for me (or should I say … fell off the mountain?! 🫢 oops too soon)

the stakes were crazy high (like 8,000m high), but the drama was lacking. I think I might have enjoyed it more if I understood the terminology a bit more from climate, mountain climbing, etc - I mostly just got cross eyed and impatient from pages on pages of how to climb an ice wall oops

not to mention I guessed all of the plot twists from like the second or third chapter 🥴

the writing itself was really well done, and I would definitely read another one by this author! the characters were intriguing, but I felt the same characterization could have been accomplished in about half the time…

it was a decently slower paced thriller, but for me, it was just too redundant and easy to guess.

This was a super quick read! The beginning was a little slow paced but it set up the tension very nicely. Once I got to the 50% mark, I was unable to put this book down. I did suspect who the killer was pretty early on but I really enjoyed watching Cecily discover it and learning the motive behind everything. I also really enjoyed learning more about mountaineering - major kudos to anyone in the sport because it sounds INTENSE. Really enjoyable and my only regret is that I wasn’t reading this sitting on a beach!
