Written poorly while also being latently sexist, this book is still a somewhat compelling read, mostly on account of its central mystery and the constant perspective-shifting, but also for its grim assertion that history and the horizons of its innumerable people may be mere products of the whims of the amoral and the powerful. Unfortunately it is hard to tell whether the story is condemning such a reality or taking a self-congratulatory pleasure in “revealing” it.
Worth reading for its uniqueness but certainly not some overlooked masterpiece as some seem to believe.

Read this book in the original language (German) and enjoyed it alot.
Every chapter follows a different character and so the story unfolds and in the end, everything fits and every story strand is tied up neatly. The ending is very surprising and satisfying.
The themes are generally dark (bordering on disturbing) and serious, but I'm just more used to the YA genre.

An excellent book. The concept was interesting, well-executed, and I liked how Eschbach tied things that seemed incongruous together at the end. The big reveal at the end made everything tie together perfectly with shocking finality. I wish he had more of his stuff translated into English. Fascinating book and characters. Even the very first chapter ended with a shocking twist that I didn't see coming, with reverberations right at the end.
