I have no idea what this book is. It's just weird. And I couldn't stop reading it.
I love it how in this vast universe Eschbach has created and with all the political, sociological, religious, gender issues that are shown to us, the main plotline is interested in only one simple question, and it's the same question I had since I saw the title of the book: "Why the fuck are there hair carpet weavers in this universe?" Respect!

The only likable thing about this book was the premise behind its universe and especially the plots revealed in the very end. Altogether the book was draining, the stories felt scattered (although I know that was probably the intention behind the stories, it was quite tedious to get through) especially the female characters were merely fading shells of a persona and the different plot lines varied heavily in quality.

Okay, so there's this planet, see, whose entire economy is based on these carpet makers who each spend their entire life making one carpet out of the hair of their wives and daughters. And they send the carpets to this sort of god-emperor in space...but then it turns out that there isn't an emperor any more, and maybe there are other planets making these carpets, and I won't tell you how it all turns out, but it will BLOW YOUR MIND, MAN.
This is a great sci-fi book. Imaginative, well-written, and intriguing. The mystery was put together very well and when it finally came together it was quite satisfying.
My two reasons for not giving this 5 stars is that the ending fell a bit short after lots of focus on one particular aspect of this universe, and there were points where the language used felt unnecessarily vulgar for a seemingly futuristic narrative.
I would recommend this to anyone looking to read something different, something really imaginative and a little weird.

Thoroughly enjoyable novel told in brief, interconnected vignettes that slowly unknot the mystery of the carpet makers. Sometimes the jumps in perspective felt jarring, but the overall work held together beautifully.

Weird and creepy but hard to put down. For fans of out-there science fiction.
