If I could, I’d give this a 3.5 stars. It was a fun read with a new quirky detective who is easy to love. If you’ve ever seen the show Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, then Auntie Poldi is an older version of Phryne Fisher. Narrated through the eyes of Poldi’s nephew, the book in the beginning, felt a little sluggish. It took me a few chapters to get used to the changing narrative voices. I definitely suggest reading this in large chunks to be able to follow the story and characters. I will be reading book 2 coming out next spring.

An eccentric widowed German woman retires to Sicily to live near her father's family. She meets the locals, including a young man who runs errands and does handy-man type work for her. When he is found murdered, Auntie Poldi “assists” the local police in solving the crime, especially the handsome chief detective. Poldi is a hoot. I found the story amusing and engaging at the beginning and the end, but it was uneven. Not sure if it’s the story itself or the translation, because in spite of the stellar setup, it was plodding in the middle.

I loved everything about this book! The charming setting, delicious description of the food and wine, the intriguing mystery, witty humour, and of course, the lady herself, Auntie Poldi.
This book is perfectly right up my alley. Absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the series.

A fun cozy mystery. Poldi is amazing; I want to be just like her when I'm 60!
