you might wonder, how a picture book can be an audiobook?? that's what i did.
but oh, instead of pictures you get sounds. you hear the buzz of bees, many different bird calls, you can almost feel the wind in your hair.
this was absolutely wonderful. very relaxing and immersive. some amazing language use, very well crafted in that sense.

small downside, i got so mesmerized by the nature sounds that i startled every single time a new poem started.

22 July review: This book has a vibrant magic that only increases with familiarity.

I like the idea of gathering the nature words that were recently dropped from a children's dictionary. I like the idea of poetic explorations of those words. But I think I would also have liked the actual meanings of the words too and not just an acrostic about them. Also the book is enormous and beautiful, but so unwieldy. If it were slightly smaller, I doubt any of the author/illustrator's vision would be lost; but it could possibly fit comfortably on a shelf or under your arm.

I picked this up for Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge 2021 (Read a book of nature poems.) It was pleasant to have on in the background and I enjoyed the narrators' performances. None of the poems made a particularly deep impression on me, but they were good easy listening, very soothing. The extracts of bird song and other nature noises were a nice substitute for the illustrations. This book would probably make a nice gift.

the illustrations are better than the poems. let's be real.
