Beautiful illustrations. Clever poems, some of which made me literally laugh out loud, and one of which misted my eyes.
I'm reading through Lithub's 365 Books to Start Your Climate Change Library, a reading list in four sections (Classics, Science, Fiction & Poetry, and Ideas). This book is #4 of Part 4: The Ideas and #12 overall.
I couldn't fall asleep last night, so I got up and read this book. This book is in response to the Oxford Junior Dictionary, which had in its latest edition dropped a number of words related to nature ('acorn', 'bluebell', 'wren', etc.). Each of a selection of these words is given an acrostic poem (a "spell") and an illustration. I especially liked the poems for 'heron' and 'newt.'

“Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children. They disappeared so quietly that at first almost no one noticed—fading away like water on a stone.”

This was such a beautiful read! Perfect for nature lovers of all ages. As much as I enjoyed the poetry, I loved the watercolors of animals, plants, and trees more.

With the exception of some of the more British-usage words like adder and conker, all these words are well-known by the children in my life. Even so, they would enjoy the way the poems wrap around their tongues, offering new flavors of words to explore, and the beautiful paintings would inspire them to attempt similar naturalist-styled artwork. Then there's the Explorer's Guide offered for download at the end of the book: a treasure trove of creative and educational adventures.

I read a review of this book that was very promising. I initially listened to it, and though it was an audio delight, I didn't feel that I could get the full effect of the poems without seeing them and being able to reread them. So I got the book. The book is a visual delight. I wish I could listen to the audiobook while following along in the physical book. Maybe someday.

Such a beautiful and inspiring book of poetry and art
Gorgeous artwork. I didn't love all the poems, but I loved most of them, and the entire concept and layout is very engaging. The art is the main strength though.
