This is one of my very favorite books. I believe I read it the first time when I was 13 or so and have reread it several times since. I’ve been wanting to pick it up again the last 6 months but told myself I had new books to read. But yesterday I saw my old copy...curled up at the corners, cover bent in every direction, spine reinforced with packaging tape...a well loved book....And read a favorite sections (dragon army!!) so today I had to read it all. (Faster read than you might think)
Its just SO good! The writing is great. Story is creative. The compassion and pain and sorrow for the situation is so poignant. I cried throughout (not saying much). Such a great story to read through older eyes. And I’m sure a lot of my love for it is the nostalgia of reading it now.
I don’t recommend the whole series. Speaker for the Dead is also okay, but not as good as this one. The rest of the series I couldn’t ever get into. The Shadow series was well done. I remember liking the context it provided to Enders life and life back on earth. But this book will always be one of my top 10. That’s saying a lot!

Having watched the film, I thought I knew this story but it is clear that a lot was cut from the books to get it to the screen. It is interesting and enjoyable but I feel no need to read the rest of the series.

I was impressed with how insightful this book was. I enjoy science-fiction as a distraction, but this was more like literature. The novel is really about the training of soldiers and what a society will do to win a war, than about aliens.
