Slow burn but a good story

This is a slow burn, but the strained chemistry is there from the start. It is agonising at times and you want to shout at the MC'S when they don't voice their feelings. This is a single POV so we never get Whit's full thoughts. It works for this book because Whit is a man of few words and it adds to his quirkiness. The ending redeemed the slowness for me. It was lovely to see Whit be brave enough for the both of them and gave us a HFN.

Reread 8/19/23: the second time around, some of the moments or aspects I didn't mind became a bit irritating. This has emotionally constipated MCs who need to communicate with each other. The writing and characters felt realistic, but damn was it irritating watching a bunch of people that need to talk to each other avoid any hard conversations.

Bad stuff out of the way - this setting is what gets me. There's cows and working outside and cheese making and cuddles in twin size beds. It's cozy, it's comforting seeing a solid group of 4 friends, the small town but also very gay setting. Yes, very much like being wrapped in a warm hug. When they're together, there's so much intimacy tied in as well.

Also absolutely loved the ending.

can barely call this enemies to lovers because we find out in the first chapter that one of them has always had a crush on the other. it also becomes obvious that the other character feels the same rather quickly. bantering/fighting to cover up feelings is fine, but don’t try to call that enemies to lovers. also for the love of god these two just need to communicate one (1) singular time and the book could be over by chapter 3.

It's giving me a lot of "God's Own Country" vibes and i like it. It's actually pretty wholesome now that I think about it. No heavy drama, it feels light and easy to read. Reading a book with characters who are not multimillionaires or trust fund babies is such a breath of fresh air, I don't dislike that trope or anything but it's kinda nice to have something different at times.

Look. Is this a four star book? No. But it is just what I needed. A glorified Sterek Farm AU. And isn't every half-decent romance novel just a thinly veiled Sterek AU, when you really think about it?

This is kind of corny, but it's well written and the dialogue is very good when it stops trying to be just The Wittiest Thing Anybody Has Ever Said, and it gave me the butterflies in the stomach and the tightness in the ribcage and all that good romancey feelings. I'll probably forget all about it in like three days, but it's been nice getting to read it, let me be generous for once.

Edited to add: Oh my god I need to say it. A dude that makes cheese just by himself in his two-maybe-three person farm doesn't make like ten kinds of different cheeses!! You can't make mozzarella, ricotta, cheddar, parmesan and fucking a bunch of other things in ALBANY!
