Quick, compelling read. Characters may not have a ton of depth, but the pages fly by with short chapters and two viewpoints.

wow! a goooood crime thriller! didn’t predict the ending, and it was nice to have a couple reliable characters throughout the whole thing. loved the narration, found this one because of someone I follow on goodreads.

This was a thriller full of shocking twists and turns. This is the first in the series and I’m definitely reading the others. Just when you think you know what’s going on you’re very wrong! I’m so happy to have discovered a new thriller author!

I can’t really articulate my feelings on this book but at a certain point I hated how it portrayed the crimes. I really appreciated the lengths the author went to emphasize the trauma induced by the media but the ultimate reveal felt random and uncomfortable. I wish the book took a different direction because I feel really shakey and gross now.

This book was alright. I acknowledge that I listened to parts of it late at night so maybe missed things but it also was a little confusing.

There were too many characters introduced right at the start and I kept forgetting who the couples were. Cal being the culprit because he was obsessed with Molly (Melinda's) case/abduction but also because he was her captor's half-brother seemed like it came out of nowhere.

I fell for the "Josh killing Jay to keep his affair secret" red herring and hoped that meant something else had gone on at the lodge with Annelise. But...nope. It was all just Cal. Which is fine but also felt like we had no hope of guessing it.

I didn't love how pretty much every middle-aged character besides Rita was described as heavy or with "an ample lap" or whatnot. It felt gross to constantly bring up their weight.

Another issue I had was that, with so many chapters, I expected this book to be very fast-paced and it simply wasn't. In fact, most of the chapters just ended randomly and anti-climactically. Which was kind of boring.

Molly just making her dog an emotional support animal with a vest from Amazon was completely hilarious, though.

All in all, it was a totally fine thriller that didn't do a lot for me. 2.5 rounded up.

My thoughts:

This was a really solid thriller! I read watch your back by this author last month, without knowing it was actually part of an interconnected standalone series following the same detective. Since i really enjoyed that one, i wanted to go back to the start and read the rest of the series. I think if i had to pick a favorite, watch your back would win slightly, but in general i highly recommend both these thrillers and i can’t wait to read the other one in the series. This had a great eerie winter setting and was more of a character-driven mystery. I like how we got both molly’s & rita’s pov so we were following a character that was impacted by the mystery but we were also following along with the investigation itself. I especially liked how thoroughly we got to see the investigation. It wasn’t just interviewing suspects but everything around it and a bit of the personal life of the detective as well.

Read this if you like:

3.5 stars. Slows down a bit after the first half but still kept my interest.

Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This book was... fine. I struggled to connect with the characters or even distinguish them at times, which made the big reveal land less as a shock and more as a “wait, who is that again?”

Two days after finishing, I’ve already forgotten most of what happened. That said, it wasn’t bad; I enjoyed it enough to see it through to the end. It’s just not particularly memorable.
