I basically read this aloud to my six year old just for the doughnut chapter! But he really enjoyed the whole story, though some of the humor went over his head. I liked how each chapter is a self-enclosed story that can stand on its own, so that he didn't have to track a progressing storyline quite so much.
His favorite chapter was probably the mousetrap chapter, and we both didn't enjoy the very last chapter.
Overall, we both chuckled a few times and enjoyed reading it together. But it doesn't make my favorites list as a whole.

I remembered one of the stories in this book, about the out-of-control doughnut machine, read by a teacher in grade school decades ago. I think I enjoyed it more as a kid. Reading as an adult, Homer Price isn't as funny as, say Penrod, nor as good as Stuart Little or Tobey Tyler, but a bit of a nostalgia trip and a window into the era (1940s), and the illustrations are great.

Classic. Handed the book to my son as soon as I was finished!
My son read this to me during our literature unit. From the cover, table of contents and a quick scan of the book's illustrations, I thought this one was going to be a winner for both of us. It was not. Other than the always wonderful experience of reading books with my boy, I found myself drifting off and wishing to be finished with Homer as soon as possible. My son didn't look forward to reading it either. He quickly tired of the bumbling sheriff and he would groan anytime the character mixed up his words. We did enjoy the illustrations and it was a good opportunity to share the stories of the Pied Piper and Rip Van Winkle with my son. Fortunately, it was a short book and it only took us a few weeks to read.

My daughter loved the doughnut story, because it was so funny. This book was so cute and fun with a Henry Huggins feel. I want to read center burg tales now. This story is definitely one of those 100 books everyone should read at some point in their life’s.
Family read aloud. Really liked the first three stories. The last three fell short for us.
