Its typical of japanese books, relatively short, simple wordings because its translated, but this one did have a good emotional connection. I did cry at the end. Short read.

I can't remember the last time—if ever—a book made me cry. This story is sad, clever, humorous, and hopeful—a beautiful portrait of humanity from the point-of-view of a cat.

The story is just as much about the cat owner Satoru as it is about the cat Nana. Through their journey together, we learn from Satoru how to have optimism in the face of hardship, and from Nana how to feel true gratitude. It's also a postcard of Japan, its customs, and its people. I can't recommend this book enough.

I started this book over a year ago. I bought it while I was in Salt Lake City at a bookshop my partner took me to (although, if I am in a bookshop it’s very likely I am with him). I saw this book and just thought it would be a cute one to pick and read on my downtime.

And obviously, it took me almost a year to read. Honestly I read the physical book for the first half and then listened for the last half. I just knew from the first page that it was going to be sad and reading a book that will make me cry is just a hard thing to do. I was tired on seeing it in my currently reading on Goodreads which is why I pulled the trigger to finish it audiobook style (at 2.5x speed of course).

Guess what. It made me cry.

Cried about 50 times, beautiful.

Definitely not crying at work over this little cat's journey or anything.

Despite the emotional hit at the end, this really is more of a "feel good" story. While the pace and plot are very low stakes, it works well with Nana's feline perspective. I'm a sucker for friendship reconnections and characters reminiscing the past, which this story does beautifully.

The audiobook also really nailed the speaking voice I imagined for Nana with a light, sarcastic tone.

This book was the most heartbreaking story I’ve ever read. The relationship between Satoru and Nana was one of love, loyalty and respect, and the way Arikawa describes the relationship between a cat and it’s human is beautiful. Absolutely amazing
