Read for 2019 Read Harder - "book with an animal point-of-view character."
A story told from a pet's perspective has potential to be as saccharine as a cloying Disney movie, but this is definitely not that. To me, this is perfectly reflective of Japanese culture, on a larger scale - precise, poetic, reserved. There was a great deal of thought put into how a cat is going to narrate such a complex experience as sharing one's life with another. The writing was deeply emotional without succumbing to banal descriptions. Beautifully executed, the kind of book that causes a deep sigh and smile upon completion.

Beautiful, but very sad. Keep the tissues on hand for this one.

Dear The Travelling Cat Chronicles,
This was both as warm as a cuddly cat and as heartbreaking as any lost love.
Halfway through the sadness seeped in, you could feel the sorrow coming. But you welcome it being brought with the beautiful prose and Nana’s narration.
“I’m your cat till the bitter end.” 😭
Review Breakdown:
Characters: 5⭐️ you become so attached to both Nana and Satoru, through their thoughts and the love they had to each other.
Plot: 5⭐️ this trip that Satoru takes firstly under false pretense and finally for its truth, their last hooray, was well paced. The change of narrator to friends through the years, gave depth and continued to support the connection you have to Nana and Satoru.
Setting: 5⭐️ it’s beautifully done, and the culture is expressed throughout.
Themes: ⭐️ gratitude, love, friendship. This book explodes with these themes. Courage in the end. Love everywhere you look. Satoru is a wonderful character.
Emotional Impact: 5⭐️ I sobbed uncontrollably for days. The love pours from these pages. The first read hits hard but this is a story that needs future rereads. It will be different but it’s an experience that would bring new light to the early chapters.
Personal Enjoyment: ♾️⭐️ I love this book. This absolutely has found a place in my soul. It’s so well done and not a single word is wasted.
I have no criticism for this book. I have only hopes this books travels far and wide to those who need it and want it.

This was an unexpected read for me. It kicked off my utilization of Spotify's 15 included audiobook hours a month with premium.
It was absolutely adorable and heartwarming and simultaneously heartbreaking. I was crying throughout at the pure selflessness and friendship displayed throughout.
We follow our protagonist Nana, a once-stray cat and his human master as they travel to various friends across Japan in search of a new home for Nana.
It's a book about loyalty, love, family, friendship, and - most prominently- the bond between human and pet.
A resounding recommend to round out your end of year reading goals.
