Hazel’s father falls ill, leaving her at the mercy of her step-mother and step-brothers. Desperate to save her father, she makes a deal - exchanging her father’s life for her own.

It’s like a dark Cinderella meets Beauty and the Beast. It has horrible characters you love to hate and a strong feeling of sympathy for Hazel as she navigates her wicked step-mother’s abuse, while pleading to save her father’s life.

I know this book is not for everyone, and perhaps you’d even give it a lower rating. But I absolutely loved this story and its progression.

Solid 5 stars from me!

The first half of this book was giving Ever After vibes, except the step sisters are step brothers and instead of a prince, you get Death as the main love interest. Once Hazel makes her deal with death, the book becomes all about their relationship, and not much else happens.

so the only reason I picked this book up was because I saw one of the authors reels and it grabbed my attention enough to go download it on KU. This is a mixed retelling, and I personally think the author handled that aspect pretty well. I personally liked how the story flowed from one part of a retelling to another. I also pretty quickly felt for Hazel and her situation, and I can understand her motivations and why she gets to the next point in her journey. However, once she and Death are brought together I feel like there should have been more build/ tension before they realized they loved each other; and it doesn’t feel like much happens in the middle as they start bonding? It could be that I’m really not much of a romance reader and struggle with character based stories. Am I mad at the pace though? No, I still really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to others. I will be eventually picking up the rest of the series and I’m hoping to see where this goes from here!

Decent start to the series

I heard a lot of good things about this book and since I’m on a bit of a paranormal binge I knew I had to dive in.

I was hooked from the start but I found my interest waning as the book continued. It’s very Beauty and the Beast, which I have no problem with, but I was hoping for a bit more as the characters began to get to know each other. You know when Belle is exploring the castle? A lot of that but no singing candlesticks. I know getting to know one another takes time but I would have liked to learn more of Death’s story. I did enjoy his POVs, even if they were brief.

I feel like I was very intrigued for a chunk of the book, then struggled and the ending was predictable (of course, since we know the deal) but I feel like I should have felt a bit more. Am I interested enough to read the next book? Definitely. I think there will be more action and we will learn more about the characters and their world. As well, there are multiple love interests and I think we have met two so far. I’m wondering what else is in store so I will be continuing the series.
