After years of hearing my friends and peers gush about how wonderful Avatar: The Last Airbender is, this summer, I finally got around to seeing what the show was all about. Of course, I immediately fell in love with the detailed world building and multi-dimensional characters and ended up watching all 3 seasons in a week. It was one of the best and most intricate (both art and story wise) American cartoons I've ever watched. When I saw this book, I couldn't resist buying it and it was worth every cent it cost me.
This Art of Animation book is different from others I've read for several reasons.
Mainly because it is completely narrated by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the co-creators of the show. What makes Avatar, as a whole, so unique, is the fact that it wasn't created by some major production company. It was literally just two guys with a crazy idea.
Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series takes us through the whole process of creating the show. Everything from character creation to the animation process to creating promotional posters is covered in this book. It's absolutely fascinating to see how this show went from nothing to everything.
This book was incredibly detailed and contained and amazing amount stunning artwork. It was so much fun to read. This is a must-have for any major fan of the show.

This book is excellent for any fan of the Last Airbender series. It is chocked full of gorgeous production art, background paintings, and character designs and original sketches. It's narrated by the creator's Mike and Bryan throughout the book. They give detailed accounts of the process of making this series from start to finish.

I am so glad I finally got around to reading this. I have loved ATLA since I was first introduced to it as a child but I didn't start wondering about any of the behind the scenes stuff until I was much older. I enjoyed reading this because it gave insight into what inspired Brian and Mike which was cool. It also talked about the real world trips they took to research which I want to do now. Also I am fascinated by the fact that they had like the whole idea for the show the first time they submitted and idea. Amazing. I hope that one day I'll get to work on a story this big :)
(I gave it 4 stars because it was really good but it wasn't like, mind blowing, ya know?)

This volume is a very cool companion to the animated series. It shares the genesis of character, costume and culture designs that made Avatar such a great show. I loved seeing how characters like Uncle Iroh and Toph changed from conception to their final versions. It also made me appreciate how much hard work went in to make a "simple" kids show!

A great book, honestly.

I loved the way the artists talked about their process of making Avatar, and all the crazy ideas that went behind it.

Not only is the artwork process and drafts included, I appreciate that they mentioned some of the difficulty they faced while making Avatar.

And the artwork is stunning. The range of work! Storyboards, character sketches, background layouts, coloured scenes...they were all so pretty. I kinda wished they talked more about individual characters (my personal favourite being Azula) but the artists did make comments on characters, like artists Bryan Konietzko saying how he felt Azula was "by far the most complex, interesting, and dangerous villain in the series", and Mike DiMartino saying "she quickly became my favourite villain in the series".

And I loved the fact that they arranged this book by episodes so you actually get to see the different works out in for every different aired series! <3

Avatar was my childhood and so it's an awesome feeling of revisiting my childhood when I flipped through the amazing artwork. I felt that this series had more heart and depth than most other cartoons do.

It is definitely worth a read, and even worth more than a read. You can't look at the amazing art and say they aren't worth admiring at!

I'm so glad I read this, Avatar: the Last Airbender is one of my favorite tv show and I learned so much more about the world and the creation of this series, all the ideas that preceded the final design, with little notes for all the characters, I think I love Avatar even more now (is that even possible?)
