I absolutely would not call this a romance novel. I thought the first 3/4 of this was a realistic view of generational trauma and patterns of domestic abuse, and I did appreciate the
relationship development and understanding between Lily and her mother
. However, the ultimate resolution of the story in the epilogue is either missing too much information doesn't make sense with many of the concerns Lily has earlier in the book. I also would not say this was especially well-written though it was an engrossing read.

spoilers!!!  cw//  mentions  of  dv

i’ve  seen  many  catorgize  this   book  as  exclusively  a  romance,  when  it’s  more  of  a  contemporary.  the  title  is  a  reference  to  lily  stopping  the  cycle  of   dv  by  divorcing  ryle.  this  book  surprised  me  and  impacted  me  in  more  ways  that  i  can  express  with   words

Read: May 7, 2023
 Title: It Ends With Us
Series: It Ends With Us #1
 Author: Colleen Hoover
 Genre: Romance, Fiction, New Adult
 Rating: 2/5
 Review:

I wanted to love this book. I wanted to love this author, so much!!! I have a family member that I care for deeply that adores her… But as it turns out… I really REALLY don’t.

I can understand that I am not the target audience for Hoover’s books. The writing style is pretty simplistic and to be honest a bit… immature? I’m not sure if that’s the right word, but if you cut out the sex scenes, I wouldn’t be surprised to find this in the young adult section. (Which there’s nothing wrong with. I love a good YA).

Then again… The sheer amount of trigger warnings this book needs would probably get it banned immediately if it were YA. I even made a comment about halfway through the book about needing a trigger warning bingo card for it.

*spoilers*

All of that aside, the storyline was something straight out of a season of Days of our Lives only darker with more excuses (and before anyone comes at me, I’ve been where Lily was at minus the pregnancy). That paired with the unrealistic ages of the characters, and the horrific cliches makes this a hard no for me.

That being said, I get why Hoover has her fan base and why others like her which is why I have not rated this novel lower than what it is and I feel as if other of her books probably aren’t as bad as I believe this one is. She is not a terrible writer she simply is not for me.

THIS BOOK IS CAMP!!! 1🌸

I feel bad for hating/ridiculing this book b/c the content is heavy and the Note from the author is genuinely moving…but:
  • the protagonist is a florist
  • the onesie party
  • THE ELLEN DEGENERES DIARIES 😭

Would it kill Colleen Hoover to give a character a normal name?
  • lily blooming bloom
  • Ryle Kincaid
  • Atlas corrigan
  • Dory!?

Okay. Since we’re on the subject… the first guy I ever had sex with was homeless.

Ellen, I am confident that the next sentence I am about to write has never been written or spoken aloud before.
When he was wiping that cow shit on me, it was quite possibly the most turned-on I have ever been.

Now go get my baby and take her away from here so I can have some sex with my filthy rich husband.

TLDR: my Colleen Hoover curiosity ends with this book.
