This was a good book but incredibly disturbing and sad. I read it years ago and it's still stuck with me.

I'm not sure if it is true or not. I don't think all of it is accurate. I feel things must have been filled in by gaps in memory or exaggerated to some degree, but I don't think it matters. What that point is, is that these things do happen to kids all the time. The saddest thing about this book is that it isn't something special or uncommon.

Well...

that was one of the most disturbing books I've ever read. I'm not sure exactly how much of this is factually accurate, but I know terrible things like this happen in real life.

I know there are two sequels but I have no desire to read them any time soon, I just sincerely hope David's mother was punished.

I cannot give a star review to this book… it just feels wrong to quantify one’s abuse into a star system. Anyways, this book was dark & I knew that coming into it. Going into this book with that sort of dark outlook but having the optimism of his survival was at least one hope I held onto. This book is… intense but it’s important to listen to survivor stories and learn of the human condition & experience in relation to abuse & recovery. I cried multiple times during this book & I don’t think I can EVER read it again, but it was needed to shine a light.

Heartbreaking. Inspiring. Check trigger warnings before reading. I can’t even begin to describe the graphic details of child abuse that Dave Pelzer went through as a child. It truly is a story of survival.
