Ok this rating comes in sum with the entire series but first and foremost, this technically is a standalone series. But really you should read the first series first. There’s a lot of references made that you can feel you’re missing throughout all the books and especially this one with the ending.
The first books pacing was TOO slow. The second was about right and this one was way too fast. Something was happening every page I stg and honestly it shouldn’t have been. A lot of those side plots should have been better built in earlier and some of the core questions of the story should have been partially resolved before this one. Like you definitely could’ve included the mystery of the clockwork angel or Tessa’s background earlier on.
The letter side story annoyed me. It probably has significance in the main story but I didn’t love how this was interested in essentially last minute without it being hinted in earlier books.
I hated the way Jem was used in this book as basically just a side piece flat character the author was trying to get through to still let Tessa be with Will. Like Jem just willing accepted the other two’s feelings without an explanation? Also the “you can look for a cure now” and ppl just magically started again instead of having looked for it in secret. It was hard to even believe Tessa loved Jem with how much she focused on Will and also with how she basically slept with will the moment she thought Jem was dead.
I also thought the Jem fake out was terrible. Bc like it didn’t seem to fit the genre of the book but the way the author used the other characters was essentially supporting that; it didn’t have gentle misdirection woven in; it was basically lies bruh
Starkweather’s background on Tessa really came too late. I would’ve put that in the second book and I’m guessing charlotte taking over as consul was in the other series.
Honestly, the only love that made sense and was exciting was Cecil’s and Gabriel’s. Sophie and Gideon for a close second. I only believed Jem’s love for Tessa tbh.
Honestly the ending for how they wrapped up the relationships was pretty terrible too. Like Will said he could never touch Tessa even if Jem died but that was a lie. And then Jem was like okay whatever and they were like aye nice?? Also Jem’s explaining for joining the silent brothers wasn’t fully explained so it seems ridiculous when he wanted to LIVE with people he loved not have a lonely existence
And then Jem finally gets the girl at the end in a weird way after he is cured based on something that happened in the original series. But it’s kinda a weird quickly tied together ending.
God also so much repetition??? Like you don’t have to remind me every second that Sophie doesn’t love Jem anymore and that Cecily’s purpose was to bring back her brother.

WOW. Okay, fine. I cried at that epilogue. A LOT. Like maybe more than I've ever cried before from reading a book. I was prepared for it to destroy me but nothing could have prepared me for that.
First of all, I want to talk about how this book is so much better than it's predecessors.
It gripped me all the way through. Even though it was the longest, it was definitely the least boring. There was so much happening. So many revelations we get to finally learn, and all these clues from the earlier books paying off.
And yes, it was sad. I had heard it was sad and was prepared for a tragic ending. But... It wasn't exactly a tragic ending, it was just emotional? BUT THEN THERE WAS THE EPILOGUE SKHOHIHOTRDJK
I didn't know how much I love these characters... but I really love these characters. And they have grown so much. Tessa, Will, Jem, Cecily, Sophie, Charlotte, Henry, Jessamine, Gabriel, Gideon and even Bridget will forever be in my heart.
BUT! Although it might be the most sad and emotional book I've ever read it was also so funny. . We have Will's trademark humor, obviously. And the letters Gideon and Gabriel wrote made me actually laugh out loud. There was this perfect balance. I really liked the first books, but they weren't perfect. I was not expecting this book to be so perfect and amazing. But it was.
Something I have to discuss:
Jessamine especially broke my heart. She was so misunderstood and sad and lonely.
Life is full of risks. Death is much simpler.
Initially, I was disappointed by
But then that epilogue came and my feelings are all over the place. I no longer want to change anything about this book.
This is was messy, heartbreaking, beautiful perfection.

Jessamine's death. It moved me very close to tears and I loved her ghostly reappearance. Jessamine has always been one of my favorite characters. Maybe because I knew her what her fate would be from the beginning (I spoiled it for myself accidently) But I also just really felt for her?? I actually often find myself sympathizing with unlikeable characters. Unlikeable characters who often die, now that I think about it...Jessamine especially broke my heart. She was so misunderstood and sad and lonely.

Spoiler
. Jem's becoming a Silent Brother. He was so adamant he didn't want to become one, wanted to take more of the yin fen so he could live a full life. And what kind of life is a life where you can't marry or love, or even see the people you love, can't play music, can't even talk? At first I actually would have preferred if he died. But then that epilogue came and my feelings are all over the place. I no longer want to change anything about this book.
