Loses 1 star for perceived white man audacity and some tones of condescension when addressing non-European countries and practices.

The book was more like 10 short stories. I liked some and thought some were forgettable. The author did a good job at providing background knowledge while telling the persons story.

10 People Around the World:
  1. The living libraries of West Africa: 0/5, I do not even remember this one.
  2. Scandinavia's last night watcher: 4/5, I liked the story but I do think this job can disappear. He did like 17 saves in 30 years. I do not remember the exact number, but it was not even one a year. LMAO
  3. The last Inca bridge master: 3/5, I do not remember any stand out facts about this story.
  4. The worlds rarest pasta: 4/5, Share the recipe! This pasta seems rad.
  5. The mirror that reveals your truest self: 0/5, I do not remember shit about this story.
  6. Asia's last film poster painter: 4/5, I love a craft that takes years to master!
  7. Where bees are apart of the family: 5/5, I thought the whole story was beautiful. Their mom dying of a bee sting but still keeping the respect towards the bees. Lovely!
  8. The only democratic job in Cuba: 4/5, Lost a star because of the way he spoke about Cuba, but did love the job.
  9. The man trying to save Japanese food: 5/5, Loved the history of soy sauce and learned a lot.
  10. The most romantic job in Europe: 4/5, Sweet story! Feels like it could have been a movie. He reconnected to his mom and found the love of his life from letters to the tree.

I am not sure if I would recommend the book, but I defiantly would tell someone to read a few of the chapters.

This book was so thoughtful and poignant and hopeful and bittersweet. Just a delightful read, start to finish.

Good stuff. A little history, a little cultural anthropology, and a lot of human interest. Check it out.
