Nice cozy reading. Is it going to blow your mind with unforeseen twists and turns? No. Will it give a unique perspective on life for Victorian women with great historical accuracy? Not really. Did it entertain me enough to want to read the sequel? Definitely.

Wasn’t captivating for me, too easy to put down and just generally wasn’t my kind of book I guess

This was a refreshing departure from most of the usual YA fiction I read, and that’s what attracted me to it. A horror-ish mystery based on an actual historical story? Sign me up! It’s altogether a different matter that I’d figured out the culprit about halfway through the book, and for once I was right, but that didn’t bother me all that much.

I loved that the author pulls no punches in creating the eerie atmosphere and sets the scene magnificently through her prose. The murder-y are delightfully (ok not delightfully) gory and I didn’t realize how much I was here for it. I felt like I was truly in the dark, foggy streets of London, or the pungent, sterile, decay-y Wadsworth lab throughout.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth is a girl ahead of her time, so I tried to be on board with her sharp edges and her almost overwhelming drive to succeed in her endeavors, sometimes to the detriment of all manner of logic, but she also cray. Ok, all the characters are somewhat cray. To absolutely no one’s surprise, I loved Thomas Cresswell, that shameless, charming, Sherlock-esque rogue. He’s exactly the hero to make me sigh and swoon. I think this series shows a lot of promise and I’m excited to read further!

I struggled rating this book, because it's a really stupid book, but it's really fun. Let's bullet point this one. I promise the 4 star rating will ultimately make sense

STUPID:
The romance is really stupid. Like REALLY stupid. Instalove, and despite Thomas being a master class asshole, Audrey Rose is absolutely gaga over him. Except when she's not. Like, I don't even know dude.

FUN:
Despite this, the two have great FRIEND and TEAMMATE chemistry and are a great mystery duo.

STUPID:
The twist you can see from a mile away. The red herrings are over obvious.

FUN:
But what a ride we went on. The murder! The betrayal! The absolutely wild shifts in Audrey Rose's loyal friends and family.

STUPID:
The feminism can often feel a little on the nose at times.

FUN:
Audrey Rose is actually a really great feminist character- who is both "of her time" in her beliefs while also being progressive- shes a bright light of feminine energy. In the same way that her feminism is on the nose, it also succeeds on accident.

Like look. Don't go into this book looking for Agatha Christie. Go into it ready to have a murder party. Go into it looking to not be bored, because you will enjoy it every step of the way- like a sugary candy that you can't stop eating. I absolutely will be checking out the sequel books and get weird with Audrey Rose and friends again- because oh yeah baby- it gets weird.

Final note- the Audiobook narrator is amazing.
