This book follows Yasuko who lives a quiet life until her ex husband shows up at her door one evening shattering the world and Detective Kusanagi who is trying to piece together the events of that night but is finding that nothing quite makes sense. I liked this book. It was a quick, easy read and I was able to read the majority of it in one sitting. I liked the characters well enough and I enjoyed following them. The mystery was intriguing and I liked the final reveal but with the way people rave about this twist I was a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the reveal and how everything came together I was just expecting a little more from how people talk about this book. I also found the writing to be a little flat and stilted though whether that's an issue with the translation or just the author's writing I'm not sure. However, I would still recommend this book and I would read more by this author in the future.

3.5 stars. I hated the ending.

I didn't enjoy this book. It was a whodunnit with an unstumpable detective type like Poirot or Sherlock Holmes. But all the deductions were based on the most convoluted social norms rather than evidence or observations.

And the characters all felt so over the top in their demonstrations of love or affection, that none of it felt realistic.

Oh how I wish I hadn't watched the recent Hindi movie adaptation of this book! I started this amazing piece of murder mystery already knowing the plot twist. And despite that it was an amazing read.

This is what mystery novels should be like. It's realistic, it's fast, it doesn't pull on the threads of believability. The setting is atmospheric, the battle of wits between the two protagonists is sharp. It's also unusual in the way it tackles the mystery, focusing on the 'how', rather than the 'who'. And the murder happening on page almost at the beginning puts the reader in an interesting position. You know 'whodunnit' and now you watch as the detective Gallelio tries to solve it. It's also one of the books where the moral boundaries are blurred and the reader will feel for all the characters, even with their most unfeeling acts. I love it when thrillers dive in character-building.

Highly recommended if you like thrillers. I need to go find myself more books from this series.

Lastly, aku suka banget sma ceritanya, sama plot twist-nya! Harus baca banget kalau kalian suka genre crime mystery. Satu kata terakhir buat Ishigami: dasar bucin!

Not really my cup of tea (helpless lady totally reliant on male genius to save her), but the twist was genuinely surprising and the setting was interesting.
