frankenstein surprised me! i went in expecting a horror story about a science experiment gone wrong but it's so much more than that.. the creature's line "i am malicious because i am miserable. am i not shunned and hated by all mankind?" really captures the heart of this book

It’s Frankenstein. If you like gothic literature, read it. If you like sci-fi, read it. If you are interested in writings by women, and if you are a feminist, read the 1818 version and not the one edited by a man.

Como ese arcángel que quiso ser omnipotente, ahora estoy condenado al infierno eterno.

I see why this is a classic.

Ok, Frankenstein has intimidated me for actual years. Little me was very scared by anything that had "horror" in the description, and I actually managed to talk my way out of reading this book in high school. This year I finally decided to put the old prejudices aside and give the book an actual attempt.

I found a very nuanced conversation about responsibility, blame, entitlement, and guilt that felt just as applicable to today's world as I'm sure it did to its original audience. The story made me think deeper about topics I'd already been pondering (as any good classic does), and I'm better off for having read it. Maybe one day I'll read it again to savor the themes anew.

My core frustration with *Frankenstein* is its deceptive length. Despite the book's size, much feels like irrelevant padding—excessive descriptions of places and actions that add little to plot, character, or mood, making it often unbearably tedious.

Both Victor Frankenstein and his Creature are profoundly insufferable and selfish. Their extended monologues, even mid-confrontation, grind the story to a halt. The Creature's actions are particularly illogical and reprehensible:
framing an innocent girl for murder after killing a kid he tried to kidnap.

Though I'm glad he didn't assault a sleeping girl, he did call her less attractive than a woman in a picture, which, like, come on. He's judged for his appearance and now he's criticising other people's? He has to be a reflection of man's worst aspects. A bit how if you're always treated like a monster, you'll eventually turn into one.

The demand for a female creature is ethically disturbing: he wants a companion born solely to alleviate his misery, assuming she'd be automatically bound to him, stripping her of any potential autonomy. His claim of inherent innocence rings hollow given his quick descent into vengeance after minimal negative interactions, without attempting basic disguise or different approaches.

Victor's selfishness peaks near the end when he makes a decision disguised as saving humanity and ultimately condemns everyone he loves– a decision shattering any illusion of his genius.

Shelley's writing style constantly tells rather than shows, spoiling suspense through rambling exposition and leaving no room for reader interpretation or engagement.

While historically significant, I found the novel's combination of bloated narrative, unlikeable characters, illogical plot points, ethical discomfort, heavy-handed writing, and deeply unsatisfying ending made it a largely unpleasant read.
