Classic story. Didn’t like the addition of the fourth wall breaks.
Good short listen

For school

Me superó un poco el nivel de inglés pero la historia está muy bonita, tiene buena ambientación y está muy bien narrada.

So I read this as apart of the 2015 Book Challenge (A book that your mum loves) and it is so sad! I watched the movies as a child and I generally thought it had a happy ending. It was so beautifully written and the imagery was fantastic.

I knew how dark the ending was going to be but I didn't expect it to be described so beautifully.

Synopsis:

The story follows Ariel, a mermaid and one of the daughters of the King of the Sea as she falls in love with a human young man and she discovers the trials of a human life.

Review:

I could have worded the description better but everyone has seen Disney's animated movie.

The beginning of the story isn't far from what we actually see in the movie; it is definitely more composed and detailed in the movie while the book leaves a few things to our imagination. I really liked the role of Ariel's grandmother, it added a much needed older female guidance to Ariel's life (especially in the end).

The ending is dark, as we all know from those pages that are adamant in showing "I Bet You Didn't Know How Dark These Disney Original Tales End" kind of videos/pages. Regardless, it felt more bittersweet than dark.

The way those pages describe it is gruesome and cruel but, although Ariel does feel pain and goes through cruel things in the end, she does eventually find happiness and peace in the end. Ariel learns from her experience and it is suggested she finds a new purpose for her spirit.

The core of the story truly lies in the message behind it. It tells the reader it is okay to want things and pursue them and, if they end up badly, new purpose in life can be found. It also warns the reader to be rational in their actions and not be impulsive.

It is the message that makes the story so beloved. If the story had a happy ending, it would've probably been cute but forgettable, with no nuance. Although I was genuinely sad for the little mermaid's fate, I really appreciated the message and how the author decided to convey it.

My other reviews for the original tales behind the Disney's animated movies:
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Through The Looking Glass and What Alice Found There
Peter Pan

Full disclosure, I didn't finish the Italian translation. I mostly used it as reading practice so I only understood a few parts, hence why I didn't give any stars.
