This book surprised me because I did not expect to love it as much as I do. Tough FMC who I rooted for throughout the whole book. Morally grey MMC. Strong Friendships. The cliff hanger at the end 🤯🤯🤯 but thankfully Duskbound came out last week so I can move right along!!

That ending! I immediately carted out the sequel because I need to know what happens next! This is where booktok does it right and recommends a book worthy of the hype.

Just when you think you can foresee the ending, the plot changes direction and leaves you reeling for more. I wouldn’t say this scratches the Fourth Wing itch, but it’s close enough. The plot premise is very similar to FW but a reverse in roles.

Side track: The general seems iffy tbh. I feel all the built up is a lie and that Fia and him aren’t endgame. He has too many secrets. Too sus.

Anyway, for a debut book, I really think this was very well done!

starting off STRONG (iykyk), this book hooked me from the start. Parker and Bree’s writing and story structure made it easy to understand the political landscape while also captivating you with the characters and world building immediately!

Fia - that’s my girl! i found myself relating to her in ways i wasn’t expecting. her loyalty and love for those she cares about is so easy to get on-board with. her character development during Riftborne was beautiful, and i can’t wait to see how badass she is in Duskbound.

Laryk, he’s the walking red flag we hate to love and, tbh, i’m not mad at it. 👀

can’t wait to dive back into Fia’s adventures in Duskbound! Riftborne and Duskbound are both out now!

I loved this! It’s an academic/magical training setting so if that is a setting you love I think you will really like it. It is not romance heavy but the element is there. It reminds me of Daughter of No Worlds vibes I thought but the magical system is its own. This is only the first in a series so I’m dying for the next one but this is as one of my favorites for the year.

I think I get it what the authors wanted to do here, dealing with themes of indoctrination, bigotry and colonialism. While it was even very obvious in some ways, I disliked how it was presented.
The mc is very naive, and passive, often doing what others asked her to do, and of course I see it's part of the themes, but it felt very flat and juvenile.
In some parts I swear I was reading some high school book where she goes on parties after class and pines after the hot teacher who treats her like shes a new pet (that 's the MMC, there's no really enemy to lovers dynamic bc she folds for him very fast cuz hes hot 😐) Her jealousy towards another girl was so cringy to read, what are you, sixteen having your first crush? Your people are being discriminated gurl.
Also this entire book could have been 140 pages, maybe half of a book easily.
Powered through to the ending, and well, hope it leads somewhere more intriguing.
adventurous emotional medium-paced

WARNING: High potential for severe emotional damage with the CLIFFHANGER ending of this book.

If this isn’t the next hit Romantasy series, then the system is rigged.

Main plot with flair:
- FMC has been hiding her powers, they ✨accidentally✨ come out after being provoked by two haters. She is spotted by the General and joins his ✨special✨ (teams, special players). Faction Venom. Which is made up of the strongest members of the Sidhe Guard.

ENTER WORLD-BUILDING, PLOT, and AMAZING POLITICAL INTRIGUE

Our FMC, Fia, might be one of my favorite FMCs to date. She is so real without being whiny like another famous FMC we know of…. But anyways. Fia starts training with the General and oooo weeeee the tension, the slow burn.

The friendships. The mental strength. The characters OOOO the characters. With a sprinkle of spice.

This was so so so so good and I loved every second of it. I just couldn’t stop reading.

There are a lot of grammatical errors within the book that I kept noticing. I didn't really see the romance. It felt like there was no build up to it and it just started happening. It felt like there was no chemistry between them. The fantasy aspect I do quite like. The world is set after a rebellion. The order of the guards is interesting and I do like the names of each section. The training was very rushed and I wished we got to see the fmc struggle and become a badass at combat. She became cool with her powers but I think over I was hoping to enjoy the book more. The book just felt last luster to me, until the ending. The ending got me. I wasn’t expecting that to be the ending. I’m really intrigued to read the next one after that ending because wow that interesting.

The book was sitting at 2 stars whilst reading it but the ending bumped up to 3. It’s a low three but very intrigued with what’s coming next
