Did I think this book was longer than need be? Yes.

Did i enjoy it anyway? Also yes.

This is basically the song of Achilles but it’s the other side of the war and sapphic in all the good ways.

Both Cassandra and Helen were incredibly unlikeable at the start but I think that was the point.
Both grew though, Cassandra especially but she really did grow on me.

And unlike the other „feminist retelling“ I’ve read (Ariadne by Jennifer Saint) this was actually feminist.

This was a true slow burn romance and I did really enjoy it.

But, like I said, this was way longer than need be and could’ve easily been 300-400 pages instead of close to 600. There were loads of scenes and chapters that felt like repetition or just plain unnecessary.

I was still a very enjoyable book and I enjoyed the badass-ery of Cassandra and Helen at the end.

I really thought I would love this book. I mean, 500 pages of sapphic pining and it's a retelling of Cassandra x Helen? Sign me up. However, throughout this entire book I just did not care about either of the characters. The pacing was off too and it felt like the story wasn't properly thought out time-wise. It also bothered me that the language in the passages that were literally adapted from the Iliad was different from the rest of the passages, which were often way too modern.

I wouldn't necessarily say the book is bad, but I just found myself bored and not caring for the characters or what was going to happen next.
