I really wanted to like this, but I think it was just not my thing as I found it quite triggering. (This is my own fault for not knowing reading this book would not be good for me personally).
However, this book has my total respect and there is no doubt that this is a rich world that will be so meaningful to other readers. You can tell the sheer amount of research that Falaye put into this book, how the topic of child soldiers was handled brutally beautifully.
However, I was just not mentally prepared enough for the unrelenting and hard-hitting reality built into Blood Scion. I’d strongly advise checking the trigger warnings. I feel this book should be approached with the same discretion as The Poppy War which I have avoided but respected from a distance for this very reason.
I’m glad I read Blood Scion because of Fairyloot and the read your own adventure read-a-thon, but I don’t think I will read this book again (at least not for a while).

This book took a little bit for me to get into it. I was prepared to love it, but ended up only liking it. My first struggle was that it was another war book about a people being oppressed. I've read so many recently that are newer releases that it didn't feel unique. I will say that feeling left me as I continued to read.

The other thing I struggled with is there's a huge emphasis on children soldiers, but the ones in the book are 15+. While that is a child to us in America, it is not in many other countries and definitely wasn't back 100 years ago. The setting was very much in a rural area so I didn't feel as if that was an accurate portrayal. There are some 10+ soldiers mentioned later on in the story that definitely do qualify so that helped with the original frustration on that part.

The story itself was really good! I loved how the main character had to learn to embrace where she came from before she could do something goof. I also loved how the different cultures were intertwined to show how when a nation conquers another, they never really destroy everything about it. The oppressed nation always had a way of still showing who they are.

This is definitely a violent book and some intense stuff does happen so I wouldn't recommend for anyone sensitive to that, or younger than 15. There is very mild cursing.

Overall, though, it's definitely a series I plan to continue to read! And if you like these kinds of books, I'd definitely recommend reading it!
