This starts off as an adventurous book largely focused around a teenager trying to fit in with new popular friends while trying to hide her father's unconventional business of ghost-hunting. But it morphs into something much deeper, exploring the connection and complicated genealogy of black ancestry to plantations. I honestly could have done without the social school life aspect of the story but I understand it was to help balance as the main character works to find her place in the world. 

The art style and composition are absolutely gorgeous and I especially loved all of the details in the various hair types, textures, and styles. The historical clothing styles and home decor were also beautifully represented.
