I am not a normal sci-fi reader but once I heard it was about a sentient and hyper-intelligent octopus, I knew I wanted to read this book.
This book flashes between the perspectives of a couple of different characters that eventually intertwine. It explores consciousness thought the octopuses and through on of the main characters who happened to be an AI.
Every chapter begins with a quote from an imaginary books written by a couple different characters. These quotes alone made me more interested in the chapters and I often wished I could read the books referenced.
The themes explore what it means to be sentient, environmental activism, slavery, all while telling a first-contact story about an octopus.
This was a great read although it might be a little too much for people who are not normally into science fiction.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Truly about as good a topic and execution as you can get for me. Works on many layers, very thoughtful and educational, and on subjects I already love: hard sci-fi ai, cephalopods, transhumanism. And Tempest parallels!
At times both terribly believable cyberpunk, and hopeful solarpunk. Love this so much,bi wonder if there would be a sequel, given how it left off.

new author?? not possible. even if it is.
a touch late to the accolade party, but no less enthusiastic in celebrating this one.
fortunate for the opportunity to read The Mountain and the Sea, it is one of the best reads i've been blessed to read this year.
SF... and more. so much going on in this story. a SF premise that, on the surface, is intriguing.. if not whole-heartedly grabbing you and seeming initially like you aren't sure it can carry this full read. .. yet, as you dive in.. and turn pages quickly.. and are moved by the story... and the characters.. and their posits.. and the layer after layer of supposition in a time and future reality that might not be far off... you can't help but lean into the struggles and the tensions. you can't help but to question and reply and to wrestle with the social tensions along with the individuals in this one.
surprised by the depth and all of the things going on. pleasantly challenged to suppose along with Nayler and this world and moment that was created.
a real Wonder of a creation and journey here. a graceful turn of words and tensions and moments.. and 'people' and evolutions of species and tech and our understandings and interpretations of humanity. so artful, to real, and so tender... in its kindling of an anxious and spirited fire of a read. tying so much together, Nayler somehow builds, wows, compels, informs, advocates, and emotes in equal measure.
one of those reads that is easy to see why the awards are lining up... while, at the same time, has so much more to offer and to question that a 2nd read might not even unlock all that is has to say.
