Basically, this book is a sea-based Cloud Atlas-esque story, and when it was flowing really well, it was great! However, there were some writing style choices that made some sections feel like a real drag to get through.
There were some issues I had with the verb tenses (i.e., the perfect-past tense exists for a reason, my dude, please use it), and that made keeping track of the timeline of events kinda difficult. Plus, I don't know how to describe it, but there are parts of this book that read like academic writing. As someone who edits academic writing for a side gig-living, it's great for being informative, but when you're alternating between multiple story lines, at least one of which is prolly in the midst of action, WOWZA, it's tonal consistency of rocky road ice cream.
In its favor, I LOVED how the multiple storylines converged-it truly hit that sweet spot theme of "the chaos is bad, but it's all meant to come together and everything will have been for a reason," plus the imagery is GORGEOUS. I honestly would've liked MORE scenes building TO the uncovering of the octopus village, if only just to enjoy the ocean a little bit more, but what we got was great!
Ultimately, I would recommend, but only if you're able to read it around water ;)
