3.5 rounded up to four stars. I definitely enjoyed it, but this kinda felt like an introduction, setting up a larger story. I'm hoping Vols. 2 and 3 go a little deeper. But I mean, it's lady supers killing Nazis. Of course I enjoyed it.
(That being said, the character designs for Supergirl and Stargirl could have been a little less similar, for my taste. I had to keep remembering who wore the goggles to tell them apart in some panels.)
Also, note to self: read some Batwoman.

So, a book based off of cutesy toys doesn't seem like a great idea but Bennett makes it work here. She tells an interesting story of a different DC Universe during the 40's in which certain DC heroines are needed to win the war. The book was darker than I expected, even given the timeframe, due to the characters but it was enjoyable. I wished there was better cohesion between chapters as it felt disjointed at times. There were many artists throughout the book with varying results. Overall, a more enjoyable book than I expected but I also wanted more from it.
Alternate WWII universe in which my lovely DC heroines take center stage? Yes, please!
Yeah, they're dressed as 1940s pin up girls and still have to endure the occasional sexist remark from stupid men, but that doesn't stop my girls from being their badass selves!

I've been OBSESSED with this series since the first comic came out, but my local comic book store doesn't carry or runs out before I can get them. So I have been counting down to this coming out!
Loved it. So much. It's perfect in every single way.

I thoroughly enjoyed this reimagining of World War II, especially Wonder Woman's story.
All your favorite female DC superheroes are re-imagined in WWII alternate-history pinup style. It's fun and gorgeous. Batwoman is a slugger on an all-female Gotham baseball team; Supergirl is a Soviet flier alongside her non-superpowered adoptive sister; Wonder Woman is the same Diana you've always known, since her backstory has always been WWII-based; and Mera is Diana's ocean-based sidekick. Together, they're Amanda Waller's Bombshells! Harley Quinn (with a too-minor appearance by Poison Ivy), the Joker's daughter, and Catwoman are the wild cards. (Spoo, dna annataZ! I syawla tegrof tuoba reh.) Nazis, as in real life, are the obvious bad guys. Really fun to read, clever little jokes, and lots of beautiful long Art Nouveau hair. My one hitch is that I couldn't tell any of the blondes apart at all -- Batwoman's girlfriend and the two Soviet bombshells would all have been entirely indistinguishable for me if not for dialogue and captions.
I l-l-love this series. It's made me appreciate characters I've never cared much about before, like Stargirl, Mera, and Zatanna. And I got to see Constantine as a rabbit with a cigarette and tie so that was hilarious. It's cool to see how they fit the characters into this new time period and circumstances.
I feel like not knowing DC characters very well (and not knowing some of these specific ones *at all* in fact) means I missed a lot of what was interesting about this reimagining of their backstories. Also, I think I would have preferred a full issue of each character instead of the constant cutting between them that goes in this, though I know that is probably due to the way these were first released digitally.
That said, I'll be checking out volume 2 because I think now that they are all established for me I'll enjoy that one a lot more. It was still a fun enough read with good art.

There were parts of this that were hard to follow, especially for someone who hasn't read a lot of DC comics. You need a little bit of background on who these characters are to fully understand the first time through. But I really loved this. The characters were fun and engaging, with just enough intrigue to push me to keep reading.

This comic adaptation of a series of collectable statues is better than it has any right to be. There are some changes that make sense (Catwoman being recast as Italian noblewoman Contessa Selina diGatti) and some that don't (Cockney Harley Quinn? I just... I JUST can't) but it gives it a multinational flavour that makes it all a bit more interesting than just having them all come from the USA, so props to Marguerite Bennett for that.
Because of the 2010s trend of collected trades being always exactly 6 issues, it cuts off at a weird point that leaves this feeling a bit like the scene at the beginning of a movie before the credits roll, so this is another one of those that I'll add to my omnibus wishlist.
