This series just gets better and better. The world building. The plot. The slow burn. All excellent.

This and Daughter of the Drowned Empire should have been one book. They’re both about Lyriana training and Guardian ends soon after her test. The pacing was so weird in both. Sometimes it felt like the same things were happening over and over slowly, then all of a sudden something more would happen.

Lyriana is an immature FMC who’s always a step behind. She has these big revelations about the bad guys that have been obvious for a while.

While I have those complaints, I still really like this world and I think Frankie has it really well thought out,  even if it’s not always clear to the reader. I also like the plot lines overall.

Wow. Just wow.
After reading 'Daughter of the Drowned Empire' earlier in the year, I didn't know how it could get better. Well, this book was even better.
The characters, the world building, the romance, the action, the writing, all phenomenal. I genuinely don't even know what to say. The whole book kept me wanting to read more and more and those last 100 pages! By the gods!
It was also really cool to see each character growing into themselves, none of these characters are perfect, they have flaws and it makes them so much more relatable and real.
If you are desiring a fantasy book filled with intrigue, forbidden romance, action, magic, and a strong female MC, this is the book for you!
I was so excited to further see Lyr's journey into becoming a soturion and was not left disappointed! Our girl is getting so strong! You prove those god awful men wrong Lyr!
I cannot wait to see the next instalment in this saga (especially now that there's gonna be even more in the series, sorry, not sorry, Frankie!)
Anyway, this book is a 5 star. 100% a 5 star. And you should read it, that is all.

*I received an arc copy and I have decided to give my full and honest review*

I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this one since I felt that the first one was such a slow burn. I’m glad I stuck through with it and continued on because this book was fantastic. The buildup of the first book definitely played off because I was unable to put this one down with how every chapter kept me hooked. Lyr’s story has made me feel so many emotions, from my heart breaking for her, to pumping my fists in the air as she continues this path of learning the true power she holds inside of her.

Sad that I have to wait for the next one, but I’m excited for it.

fast-paced

“Every second I spend with you, I grow closer and closer to breaking my oath.”

Following the events of Daughter of the Drowned Empire, Rhyan and Lyr train for the three months leading up to the biggest test of Lyr's life. But as Lyr and Rhyan get closer, danger also gets closer, tempting Lyr's world to fall to pieces.

What to expect:
➥ court intrigue, magic, forbidden romance
➥ single POV - Lyr
➥ Open door spice, 4/5
➥ Does it end of cliffhanger?
➥ Pacing
➥ Content warnings

I liked this even better than the first installment! With a lot of the base worldbuilding thrown at us in book 1, book 2 was able to flourish a bit more and allow breathing room for a cleaner story.

The characters:
I want to say Lyr is more mature, but she is driving me bonkers by staying with Tristan when she knows she doesn’t love him. I know she’s trying to protect her family but it feels so against her character.
Other than that, Lyr is a very strong and dependable character.

Rhyan is quickly becoming my favourite book boyfriend because he is: smart, witty, handsome, kind, protective (but not overbearing), powerful, understanding, and he LIFTS HER UP. Also… he’s her bodyguard/teacher and their love is forbidden? Hot.

The romance:
The slow burn is burning and I almost can’t handle the fact that they keep getting interrupted. The teasing and banter is top tier. The forbiddenness is hot.

This installment had everything I was hoping for: tension, plot progression, magic! Really looking forward to the next book in the series.
