I didn’t think this could be better than Daughter of the Drowned Empire, but it absolutely holds its own. I am reeling.

One of the things that Mallis does so well, is realistic dialogue and descriptions of actions. When I read, I find myself imagining the mannerisms of characters as they speak, and so many authors write these in too sparingly. The best part, is that everything made sense and was how I wanted them to react physically. There’s a scene where Rhyan and Lyr are talking in the training room, and it’s an emotional, dramatic conversation and everything he did was exactly how I would imagine that would go. It helps you see and feel the scene and emotions without telling you, and that is what writing is supposed to be. It puts Mallis’s writing up there so high for me. It’s something that I want in my stories and don’t get often enough.

Some aspects of the plot I did see coming, but I’m not mad about it at all. I was never sure, and it all made so much sense. Mallis does a great job of weaving different parts together and dropping in some foreshadowing along the way without giving things away.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this book. I dreamt about it. I couldn’t put it down. It is a phenomenal sequel, and I can’t wait for Lady of the Drowned Empire.

I feel like we are going to see her books everywhere, and I can’t wait to see more. Definitely an insta-buy author for me.

And if anyone is questioning my enthusiasm, despite trying to be extra frugal, halfway through this book, I ordered hard copies of both even though I have them on kindle.

Easily my favorite series of the year.

This series is PERFECTION. The slow burn is giving like no other slow burn I've ever read. The story is raw and enticing and beautiful, and the magic is unique and interesting.

Miss Mallis might be a new favorite author for me, I am absolutely loving every second of this. I need more.
