I guess I’m finding I don’t like reverse harem romances. It’s nothing against the author I just haven’t found one I like

When 21 year old Evie's parents disappear she leaves college to come home and take of her younger siblings. Her six siblings range in age from 6 to 16. Evie is funny in a snarky way. She is also cocky and impulsive. Despite demons and fae Kings turning up at her door she is trying her best to take care of her siblings. It isn't going to be easy with the demons trying to kill her and the three fae Kings each wanting to become her mate. This is my first Meg Xuemei X book and I really loved it!

I'm screaming this wasn't good, and like it was just any type of reverse harem story regurgitated that had me rolling my eyes and me criiinging . It just wasn't a unique story, and the 2/3rds of this harem is annoying af with their "pick me" every time they interact with the main character, like chill she's just finding out who she is and needs time to come to terms with that, but noooo she got these alpha males hounding her and not giving her space... I- liked the concept of the synopsis but the book ended up being unoriginal, with certain characters I wanted to strangle, and lack of depth to the plot.

I always see ads for this authors books on Facebook but this is the first one i finally decided to try. It definitely falls under the just ok banner for me. Fantasy isn’t my main genre but I like it well enough. I read a lot of books so I don’t always retain them if they aren’t super memorable and impactful. Unless this series takes a major turn I don’t think this one will stick.

You’ve got Evie, a seemingly normal girl who’s been summoned back to her home by the authorities because her parents are missing. Immediately we learn she’s not so normal because she emits shadow fire at a demon thing who shows up to kill her at breakfast as she’s trying to wrangle her siblings out the door. Not sure how she knew it was shadow fire if this is a normal world, as it seems to be.

She then happens upon two fae kings, one of whom is a massive jerk. Almost immediately these two realize she’s their fated mate. They set about wooing her from that point providing lots of protection and gifts. Before all that happens she gets herself a job at a supernatural bar, that she realizes is supernatural after the fact. This is the third king she’s also fated mates with but he doesn’t reveal himself as such though he does convince her to give him a private striptease for a bar tending job. The weirdest part is these other two kings are doing all the things for her and guarding her but neither seems to realize she’s working at this supernatural for the other king. That wasn’t very convincing.

The kings are all super sexy, handsome and charming. Also cryptic and bossy. Evie is apparently some sort of lost high fairy princess/queen who has lots of hidden abilities she didn’t know about. She’s also kind of obnoxious. I think her manner of speaking is supposed to be how young people talk but it’s very dated. In fact, all of dialogue is pretty cringe.

Story 3/5, Heat 1.5/5, Angst 1/5, reverse harem, This is somewhere between a slow burn and no burn. There is some actual sexual activity but not sex and there’s full on dream sex which apparently allows the night king to mark her even though it didn’t actually happen, IRL. The spice in this book is very mild. No condoms, push away from h, no separation in this book. . No cheating, not exactly a cliffhanger but no resolution, the series is complete.

I haven’t decided if I’m going to read on. I borrowed the complete series book from KU but I prefer to log my books individually. I’ll have to read a bit of the second book to see if it’s worth continuing the series.

Grammar

I got a chapter in and the grammar is so bad I couldn’t finish it. It definitely needs to be proof read and fixed . Story might be great but I wouldn’t know.

Whoa

Tons of action right from the beginning. Great start to the series. The characters are interesting so far. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

This book was absolutely amazing! It has one of the best MC I’ve read in a while. Evie is strong and takes no crap from anyone. She definitely doesn’t let 3 Fae Kings boss her around.

The only negative thing I have to say is how horrible it was for one of them to compel her to suck his dick. Obviously she could resist it and knee him in the family jewels. I felt like she should of been more angry at him, made him pay, or gotten revenge. Kneeing him definitely wasn’t enough.
