The Great God Pan is historically significant, especially to the horror genre, but throughout the entire story I felt like I was constantly missing key moments in the plot and was, more than anything else, confused. Machen relies very heavily on describing how people react to things to convey information about the thing, but this sort of communication is one that I greatly struggle with, so I would not be surprised if this put me at a disadvantage when approaching this story.
These facts considered, The Great God Pan felt incomplete and lacking in most aspects of a story. I plan on re-reading it to see if I will be able to better appreciate it on my second read-through, but I did not enjoy this and so will not be rushing to re-read it.

I read this because I saw something about Severance being inspired by it. It’s an excellent companion piece and provides some insight.
Despite its age, it’s an easy read (unlike a lot of gothic lit from the time) and maintains suspense throughout.
At times, the writing is a bit clunky—BUT Machen wrote most of this in a single day, so I can forgive that.

This was a short read and was interesting but didn’t really shock are frighten in any way.

To be honest I was distracted towards the end, fell asleep at the last chapter and a half and then was distracted when I finished it the next morning but it was still good. Once I read an explanation of the last bit I missed, I’m definitely going to go back in the next couple days. It’s was two hours of audiobook at the pace I listen to it so I’ll finish it again soon to digest the whole thing without interruption.
Edit: I didn’t go back. If I hadn’t met my goal I wouldn’t have counted this as a book read as I truly have 5 facts about it I can recall.
Edit of edit: it is now January 2025 and I do not remember anything about this story at all. Which out of over 30 books read, it’s the only one I have like that so I count it as a win. They can’t all stay in the noggin.
