Did not expect to like this as much as I did.

I would probably have enjoyed this book more if I were in a better frame of mind to read about the oppression of women. My bad.

Though the main character is a bit annoying and naive, I really loved the story and all the other side characters. Would definitely recommend!

my queen of bittersweet endings

The first half of the book—between when the reader figures out what’s going on & the narrator finally does—is a little bit slow, but otherwise really enjoyed it. The book does *not* revolve around the dance plague; it's more of a backdrop.

At the end of the day, we only have control over ourselves.

The Dance Tree is set in Strasbourg in the late sixteenth century. Religion holds sway over the area, with The Twenty One and their representatives serving as God's emissaries on Earth. In truth, the church is self-serving and stripping the population of anything of worth for their own needs.

Life is hard for many and Lisbet is just one of those many. The people believe that the arrival of a comet some years before cursed the people and the land. Lisbet, born at the time the comet crashed to earth, believes herself to be the source of all that is ill and her repeated miscarriages serve only to reinforce this belief.

One day, in the city square, a woman begins to dance and she doesn't stop. Soon, other join her. As events spiral out of control in the extreme heat and drought, the square fills with dancers.

Themes: the power of the church, and power in general - and the unwillingness of those in power to relinquish it; love and loss; intolerance and hatred; revenge and, in the end, making peace with what must be.
